The New Testament tells us to beware of false doctrines, false prophets, false teachings, and false Christs.
(Matt 7:15; Matt 24:11; Matt 24:23-24; Mark 13:21-22; Luke 6:26; Acts 13:6 and 2Cor 11:13; Gal 2:4 also 2Pet 2:1-3 and 1 John 4:1; Rev 2:2; Rev 16:13 and 2Cor 11:4; Gal 1:6-9) There are very few subjects mentioned more often than this in the New Testament.
Now of course we all think we are right, and some times we think everyone else is wrong. We believe what we believe.
When we've spent a lot of time, money, blood, sweat and tears following a certain belief for a long time, that is a big investment to give up.
So how do we know who is right? The obvious answer is "Look in the Bible". But even this doesn't always bring agreement on everything. It seems some subjects are debated almost daily and both sides have a lot of scripture to back up their beliefs.
Of course this has been happening since the beginning of the church. It's really nothing new. Between the Gospels and Revelations are many books that deal with putting out all the little fires that happen along the way, setting people back on the path, correcting their beliefs.
Some of the doctrines I have seen here on TJ in the past few weeks aren't really new, but I am surprised at the frequency that they are beginning to show up. Almost everyone who reads this will have an issue with something.
Here are a few...
There really is no need for marriage. It's just a man made institution.
There isn't a hell or hades or lake of fire. This is just a place from Greek mythology.
We are all going to heaven whether we believe in Jesus or not. After all God is love. He wouldn't put anyone in hell.
There really is no such thing as a universal truth, each one of us has our own truth.
Once you become a Christian, sin doesn't really apply anymore. In fact after you become a Christian you can't really sin.
God is love, and that's all he is. He isn't just or Holy or wrathful and he doesn't punish those who he loves.
The Bible isn't what determines what sin is, our guilt is what determines what sin is.
Once you get saved, you never need to ask for forgiveness ever again.
Satan and demons are really just doing God's work, they are here to teach us things and minister to us.
Jesus isn't the sacrifice for our sins, he is our replacement.
Jesus isn't God or the son of God.
Jesus doesn't want a personal relationship with us. He just wants us to be saved.
..some of these seem like minor things, and some of these are hidden off in threads with other (somewhat un-related) thread names. People ask if we ever get tired of fighting about them, I know I sometimes do. Other times I feel God gives me strength. But in a way all of this is good. As iron sharpens iron, it tests my resolve, it makes me study the reasons I believe what I believe. It gives me sciptural insight to things I have taken for granted, and as I study the Word more, God reveals himself to me more and more.
