I did this in another forum and it was pretty cool watching all the different views of things. So I thought I would give it a try here too. So Please write why you believe Jesus had to have a virgin birth.
Thank You and have a wonderful week

I personally believe the Holy Spirit wouldn't have taken a woman that was "defiled" by a man. Deut 24:1-3;
Where as Joseph couldn't really say that God/Holy Spirit defiled Mary. Of course Mary had other children later. (It appears they all weren't from Joseph)
Besides the prophesies,... (Isa 7:14; for example)
Also Jesus was the Son of God, so an earthly man couldn't have sired Him.
Yes, Joseph was His earthly father, but not His biological father. Jesus was the Son of Man in the sense that He was fully human with human weaknesses.

This is a subject that I have endevoured to research more than once.
I have not come to any conclusions but I have gathered some interesting notes.

Ecclesiastes 3:15 What is happening now has happened before, and what will happen in the future has happened before,
because God makes the same things happen over and over again.

I kind of do a detective thing where I just let elements hang on a chalkboard until I can see
clearly enough to be able to spot patterns and cycles that can help define actions or actors.
We should be able to find elements in this story that appear elsewhere.
It won't look the same but it will have the same pattern.

Genesis 2:21So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh.
22And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he madeh into a woman and brought her to the man.
23 Then the man said,“This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman,
because she was taken out of Man.

This could be considered the first virgin birth,it has the same elements but looks different.
The ancient Hebrew mindset looked at behaviour patterns and not appearances.
Adam= red earth
Eve= the mother of all living.

The first Adam was of course Adam, the second was Jesus.
From the first came forth(with God's intervention) the mother of the living.
From the mother of the living came forth rebellion.

Mary-from Miriam=rebellion.
Jesus=Yahweh Is Salvation.Salvation is a life giving spirit.

1 Corinthians 15:45 Thus it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being”; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit.

That's as far as I got so it's cluttered and chaotic like a construction site.

  • Most importantly it was a must to fulfill scripture: Isaiah 7:14
  • Having a biological father would have annulled Jesus deity
  • Jesus had to be pure and the perfect sacrifice: born of a virgin and of God!

Without looking at my study bible, I'm thinking there are two essential reasons

1. Fulfill the prophecy as RJ mentioned
2. A miraculous, supernatural entrance into the world as a human being

These two together, right off proves He is Son of GOD. Then of course you have all these other fulfilled prophecies and miracles during His ministry.

He didnt have to be born at all. He could have come down fully formed, still suffered and die for the sins of the world. He was born for our sake, for our faith, in being a priest with all the same problems we can grow up with.

Jesus was the "second man". 1 Corinthians 15:47 (KJV)
47 The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven.
Adam was directly "fathered" by God from the ground up, providing a legal basis for the way Jesus entered the world. That way Jesus had a legal right to undo the works of Satan against Adam.

Here are the reasons Jesus HAD to be born of a virgin.
The Baby gets NO BLOOD from the mother. The mother feeds the baby proteins and such but in no way has any given result in the blood of the child.
Now then the father of the child through his deposit has a huge factor in the babies blood type. So it is His blood that is in the child........This is why Joseph had NOTHING to do with Mary being with child. Jesus BLOOD HAD TO BE PURE AND WITH OUT SIN.

Now Jesus had to be a man in order to do what His mission entitled. Going to the cross for man. The Holy Ghost or Spirit could not go to the Cross for several HUGE FACTORS.
One the Holy Ghost could NOT EVER Take on Sin nor could the Holy Ghost die either.
So God made Mary with child ( Jesus ) with NO HELP FROM A HUMAN MAN. Once again this proves that God does not need man BUT RATHER HE LOVES MAN ! This way Jesus could be born with PURE UN SIN TAINTED BLOOD that every human being ever born after the fall of man is born with. ( SIN TAINTED BLOOD )

Now this one really angers the religious folk..rofl.....
Jesus did not get the spirit of God in Him until He was baptised by John. Just like you or me we must be born of flesh and spirit. When we get born again and God places His spirit in us....well it is the same spirit and the same way for us as it was for Jesus. The one thing Jesus had going for Him that we don't.....( this is me here....not written in stone )) Jesus did not have all these different doctrines and denominations twisting the written word of God and preaching religion into His mind.......Then again you have to admit there is some truth to in this at that.... :)

All this was done so Jesus could take upon Him self all our past and present and future sins upon Him self and give us His righteousness. Him with our sin and us with His righteousness.
Good Day for man don't ya think !!

Now being the Holy Ghost or the Spirit of God could NOT go into hell in mans place there had to be something else to this son of man/ son of God. (Note if God's spirit would have showed up at hells door step, the demons and principalities and satan him self would have left town in a hurrrrry !!

So Jesus being a man just like us and born of flesh and the spirit could face that all unwanted most devastating death ever...The Second Death the word of God speaks of. This is when man is separated from God for eternity. Just mans spirit and his soul is left and that is what departs into hell for eternity....

Now This is where Gods awesome sneak attack plan gets good !! You like High End action movies ?? Well God pulled off the most awesome sneak attack ever to be done. Now in this plan of His He knew His spirit could not go into hell with out alarming hell of His arrival. So Jesus had to believe His Father more then any of us will ever have to, for Jesus had to be willing to be separated from thee Father in order to pull off this great and wonderful plan of God. So as we know even the great centurion saw this begin to unfold.. This centurion had seen so many men be crucified and he NEVER EVER SAW anything like he saw that day.

It is written that Jesus did not even resemble a human man at this point. He was so twisted and deformed NOT from being separated from God BUT BECAUSE OF ALL THE SIN Jesus had taken upon Himself. Now you got to remember NO man will ever be able to have that much sin on him. He cant. It is impossible for any man to sin that much in one life time little know if he had a thousands life times.

Now picture this......there he laid, all twisted and deformed in a corner in the deepest part of hell. Jesus did not just slip into hell, understand but He ended up in the bowels of hell. Now watch this.........This is how Gods most awesome plan of a sneak attack works.....It is written that all the principalities, evil spirits and demons and satan him self were there hunched over Jesus in full belief that they had won and were inflicting some serious pain on Jesus.

Now comes time to employ the finish......Picture it as this........God speaking ENOUGH......
and all of a sudden this lifeless twisted deformed thing of a man begins to move and straighten up. Life begins to flow through the Spirit filled Holy Veins of Jesus. His eyes are like fire as this new man and new creature a Born Again Man with the GLORY OF GOD manifested back into the Son of Man / Thee Son Of God.

Brother Jesus began some Holy Ghost butt kicking and He took the keys of death back and he defeated every single evil being there and then the word tells us that He paraded them through the streets of hell as a cloud of witnesses watched which were the saints and prophets of old. Then Jesus ushered them all into the Kingdom of Heaven.

So this is why Jesus had to be born through a virgin birth...
I know it is a little long for a reply but it all just seems to fit together and I held back and my back space got a lot of use.
Blessings and remember ... 1 John 4:17
....Because as He is,....so are we in this world.

Hello all.

The question that was posted by Wired4fishin is below.
why do you believe Jesus had to have a virgin birth
Jesus did not have to be born of a virgin, Jesus could have reconciled us to His Father and Himself, without
being born of a virgin. After all, all things are possible for God.

Jesus chose to be born of a virgin for some very important reasons i think.

1) Being born of a virgin creates a profound controversy with humanity regarding His true identity. There would have
been much less controversy over Jesus, if Jesus had been born in a conventional sense. Being born of a virgin is
outside of the understanding of mankind, impossible to really understand. This virgin birth has always promoted
controversy and always will. The virgin birth is almost in itself, a stumbling block to humanity, an insult to the intellectual
class.

2) Being born of a virgin powerfully enforces the truth that Jesus was from above, from heaven. Jesus removes any
doubt from believers minds, about who He really is. Only God Himself can choose to be born in such a supernatural way.
No human has ever been the offspring of a virgin, it is a very important event in it's own right. God interrupts mankind with
the virgin birth, God is telling mankind that He has arrived, in a very unnatural way.

3) Choosing to take on the form of a man, the created image of Himself, Jesus does not allow His own nature to
be corrupted in the process. Being born from a male and female union, Jesus would inherit as a descendant of Adam,
the sinful and corrupt state that Adam introduced. Being born of a virgin avoids being born under the wrath of God.
Even more important, is that Jesus was not born under the control of Satan. So Jesus through the virgin birth can
become a man just like us, without being a direct biological descendant of Adam.

4) The virgin birth may be a forced variation that God had to choose. If God's integrity is absolute, being the direct
offspring of Adam would require God to be born corrupt, and under the control of the devil, mission terminated.
The virgin birth allows God to maintain His perfect integrity.

5) Being born of a virgin and taking on the human form, allows us to identify with Jesus in a very deep and personal way.
We can see what God is really like through Jesus in this human form. No debate over how much God really loves us, no
mystery about who God really is. The virgin birth allows this understanding to take place between us and God. While incidentely,
maintaining the divinity of the Christ at the same time, the virgin birth amplifies this important difference. Even the simplest
of folk will remember, that Jesus is both God and man at the very same time because of the virgin birth.

All I can say is interesting...........God KNEW exactly what He was doing. This is why all the prophets of old spoke of the birth of Christ.
As to the rest...........you might rethink all of it.
Blessings

John 1:12-13 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
(13) Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

Jesus is the first born, and He was born by the will of God, which is why the virgin birth. The Messiah, that body, was a direct
creation of God, which is what we get in being born again, but we don't have our body glorified body yet. But we are born
again, by the will of God.

I agree Chad. There is also a question of legalities. God is a person who follows the established rules. Even though He Himself laid down those rules.
First he gave dominion to Adam in Genesis....Adam bowed down to Satan thereby giving Satan dominion. Now in order for God to follow the rules and send the savior, Jesus had to be a man. He had to be born of a woman. He needed a body. So now, Jesus was born of a woman, has a body..He showed us how to do things. Then He was put to death. While He was in the grave, he descended into hell, set the captives free, (Don't forget, the saints had their waiting place there too.) and took the keys of hell from Satan. Then with Satan stripped of his rights to rule...He gave those rights back to His children where they belong. God gave us the keys. The keys, as you know, symbolize authority or dominion.
Matthew 16:19 (CJB)
19 I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. Whatever you prohibit (declare illegal) on earth will be prohibited (enforced) in heaven, and whatever you permit (declare legal) on earth will be permitted(enforced) in heaven.”

If Mary would have had sexual relations before Jesus was born, there would have always been doubt who His Father was.
Joseph was Jesus' father, but not His biological father.

God's plan was complete and perfect always.

Many have come up with reasons why it had to be so [the virgin birth that is], and many of them were good using scriptures and the prophecies contained therein, and so perhaps the following verse would wrap it all up...

"So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it." Isa 55:11

Jesus' birth paints a picture of how it is to be with believers before their marriage with Christ. Jesus was conceived in a virgin. However, the virgin Mary is herself a picture being painted of all true believers. Remember, the parable of the 10 virgins is about believers. The bride(s) (virgin(s), believers) make themselves ready before the bridegroom cometh. The way the believer makes herself ready is through the Holy Spirit giving believers new life, a new life being pregnant with God inside them, and they experience, therefore, believing (be it unto me according to your word). When the bridegroom comes then the son is able to be born. Then shall the sons of God be revealed.
Joseph is a picture of Jesus in the Bible (remember how Joseph in Genesis was rejected by his brothers, but exalted by God, furnishing a picture of Christ). It is the same in Matthew that Joseph is a picture of Christ. Matthew 1 tells us: "Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife:" Joseph being raised from sleep is a picture of the resurrection, as sleep is a picture of death in the Bible.

Although Mary was a virgin when Jesus was born, she did have other children (at least one of them was a disciple).
This confirms that none of Jesus deity came from Mary.
Also we know Mary had a sister.

Matt 12:46-49; Matt 13:55; Mark 3:31-34; Luke 8:19-21; 1 Cor 9:5; (it seems one of Jesus' brothers was married).
In John 7:3-5; we see His brothers did not initially believe in Him.
In Galatians 1:19; James is called the Lord's brother.
Jude says he is James brother ( Jude 1:1; )
In Mark 15:40; we see Mary had children named James, Joses, and Salome.
Also in Mark 16:1; we see Mary the mother of James and Salome.
In Matt 13:55; We see Mary (Jesus' mother) had children named James, Joseph (Joses), Simon and Judas (Jude).
In Matt 27:57; we see the Mary the mother of James and Joseph.
Also in Mark 6:3; it says Jesus (the carpenter) is the son of Mary, and the brother of James and Joses (Joseph) and Judas (Jude) and Simon.
In Luke 24:10; we see Mary the mother of James.
In John 19:25; Mary's sister was married to man named Clopas (her name was also Mary)

Some people believe that these were Joseph's children from a former marriage.
Yet James is called the son of Alphaeus, and Jude is called the son of James.
(Matt 10:3; Mark 3:18; Luke 6:15-16; Acts 1:13; )

Some people believed Joseph to be Jesus' father ( Luke 4:22; )

Good post B-A-C I have only one question....How does this confirm that none of Jesus' deity came from Mary? You kind of lost me lol

Some people believed Joseph to be Jesus' father ( Luke 4:22; )

1 Peter 1:23 (KJV) 23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.
gives me a clue to add to the list of reasons, somewhat restating other answers. Jesus was conceived by action of the Word of God delivered to Mary, who received the word by faith believing though wondering. By her permission of verse 38 in

Luke 1:34-38 (KJV)
34 Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?
35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
36 And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.
37 For with God nothing shall be impossible.
38 And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

That phrase is a very significant one used often in the Bible.

She yielded her yet undefiled body as a virgin for God to carry out his word. She testified to her lawful purity in response to God's messenger who accepted her statement as true. By God's law she was accounted as undefiled for that purpose, as would also be fit for a just man to take to be his wife.
Mary is the only woman to ever do that, as God had only one begotten Son, no other to offer. Jesus was then entered in by the authority of God's word, carried out by the Holy Spirit.

Bearing other children later by the corrupt natural seed from Joseph had no bearing on the purity of Jesus' birth. God had first use of her to mother Jesus.

Being born of the Spirit in Mary's womb made Jesus who he is. All of us were conceived in sin because of the seed of Adam passed down in corruption. By faith in Christ we too can be entered into the household of God by being born of that same Spirit according to John 3:5-6 (KJV)
5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

Children of God then inherit the same incorruptible seed, by the Word and the Spirit that begot Jesus. It begins by hearing the Word preached, being entirely of an attitude of complete repentance and surrender, then accepting the Word, obeying it.
