Then the LORD raised up judges to rescue the Israelites from their attackers. Yet Israel did not listen to the judges but prostituted themselves by worshiping other gods. How quickly they turned away from the path of their ancestors, who had walked in obedience to the LORD's commands. Judges 2:26-17 NLT
At an open-casket funeral, would you listen or flee if the corpse sat up and started talking?
Jesus told the story of a dead man who asked Abraham to warn his family so they could avoid his suffering in Hades. Abraham replied, “Moses and the prophets have warned them. Your brothers can read what they wrote” (Luke 16:29 NLT).
The man thought, “If they hear from a dead man, they’ll listen.” But, Jesus explained with powerful foreshadowing, “If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead” (16:31 NIV).
The Old Testament believers struggled to listen too. Even when God sent Judges and blessed the nation through them, the people turned away and invested their energies elsewhere.
Have you taken the time lately to think about the pastors and mentors God has sent to share His Word with you? Do you listen?
The psalmist listened. He wrote, “You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory” (73:24 NIV).
Prayer: Lord, help me listen today to Your Word as I read it and as it comes to me through Your messengers.
