Now Jesus and His disciples went out to the towns of Caesarea Philippi; and on the road He asked His disciples, saying to them, "Who do men say that I am?" So they answered, "John the Baptist; but some [say], Elijah; and others, one of the prophets." He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter answered and said to Him, "You are the Christ." Mark 8:27-29 NKJV
One day, Jesus asked His disciples about rumors that had been going around about Him and who He was. The twelve eagerly volunteered what they knew—that some believed He was John the Baptist, while others were saying that Elijah or one of the other prophets returned to earth in the flesh.
Jesus listened intently to the disciples’ answer to His first question, and then He dropped the question He’d intended to ask them all along, the most important question in all of human history.
Who do you think I am?
Eleven of the disciples kept their mouths shut, maybe afraid they would answer incorrectly. But Peter, as he so often did, blurted out what the others may have been thinking: “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16).
Who do you think Jesus is? That’s the most important question you’ll ever answer!
Prayer: Father in heaven, thank You for revealing to me who Jesus really is.
