That day the Spirit led him to the Temple. So when Mary and Joseph came to present the baby Jesus to the Lord as the law required, Simeon was there. He took the child in his arms and praised God, saying, "Sovereign Lord, now let your servant die in peace, as you have promised. Luke 2:27-29 NLT
Simeon had spent his life waiting on the Lord and listening to the direction of God. The daily rewards of holy living may not have seemed apparent. Was it worthwhile to seek God when it appeared the people of Israel would remain subjugated under Roman rule?
The blessing of God for faithfulness and listening for God’s voice each day may not come to you on your timetable, but it will come. Most importantly, the daily actions of faithfully remaining attentive to God will prepare you to respond to God when the time is right. There will be plenty of distractions in your life, so you may well miss God’s provision when it comes. Jesus reminded His followers to be watchful, and Simeon offers a helpful example of someone who remained attentive for God’s salvation.
What could this kind of “watching” look like for you today? Do you need a moment of silence? Is there something you need to say in prayer? The Holy Spirit is present to lead you if you are willing to listen.
Prayer: Lord, open my eyes to the ways You’re working around me, and grant me ears to hear Your voice.
