Where is the Love?

Can anything ever separate us from Christ's love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? (As the Scriptures say, "For your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep.") 3No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us. Romans 8:35-37 NLT

No one cries out, “Why me, Lord?” when good things happen. It’s only when people face trials and troubles that they question God’s love or even His goodness. The assumption is: if Christ loves me, then I shouldn’t be suffering. But Paul’s list in today’s passage was from his own personal experience. He faced enormous trials and hardships—beaten, stoned, scourged, shipwrecked; in danger from man and beast; hungry, thirsty, cold, sleepless, poor. And still he proclaimed that “despite all these things” we have an overwhelming victory” in Jesus! Paul declared that the victory was “overwhelming”! In another letter, the apostle went even further: “For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong” (2 Corinthians 12:10).

When you face hardship, especially for Jesus’ name, remember the love of Christ has not, and cannot, be lessened—and neither is the victory He has won on your behalf.

Prayer: Strengthen my faith, Father, to trust in Your great love no matter the circumstances.
