My question is: Is satan with us? Can he be omnipresent? What about when we are tempted, is satan beside us?
I have to ask because it's been scaring me a lot lately. I feel that every time a temptation arises the devil was sitting beside me. I want Jesus to be beside me always. I can't find scripture that tells if satan is beside us and watches us and has the same omnipresence as Jesus.
Hi mouse,
Satan's greatest power is the lie. And he always mixes a little bit of truth with every lie, which is why they're so powerful.
Satan has no attributes of God. He is not all-knowing, all-powerful nor everywhere present. Nor can he read your thoughts like God. However, when he sinned in heaven, desiring to dethrone God, scripture tells us he took a third of the stars with him, meaning a third of the angels with him (Rev. 12:4).
If you understand how countless the stars of the sky are, that gives a bit of a picture of the number of angels God created. This is not to say, necessarily, that there are as many angels as stars; but the idea of the metaphor used in Revelation 12:4 is to indicate the vast number of angels God created, a third of which joined Satan in his rebellion against God. Most of these are down here on earth, roaming about.
That's a lot of demons and demonic activity doing everything they can to thwart the will of God on earth.
So, it may seem like Satan is everywhere present, but it's only that he has a vast number of demons hard at work 24/7 trying to mess up things.
Again, his greatest power is the lie. In fact, scripture tells us that it is the language he speaks: When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it (the father of lies) (John 8:44)
But if you are sensing a lot of demonic activity around you and in your life, you may need to examine some things. Do you have any articles in your house that might attract demonic activity, such as a Ouji board or dreamcatcher or something else? Even unconfessed sin can be invitation for demonic bondage in a person's life. I say this not to scare you, but exhort you.
Before I was a Christian, when I was just a teenager, I used to play the card game Solitaire. I would sit in my room and play it for hours. One day, I decided, and I don't even know where the idea came from, that I would concentrate on the cards to know which card to move or turn up at every move, and I was able to win every game. In fact, I never lost one after that, if I recall correctly.
Shortly thereafter, I began to have intense fears of Satan that seemed to come out of nowhere. I was afraid to go to sleep at night and became very afraid of the dark. I was so afraid Satan was going to make me get up in the middle of the night while I was asleep and do evil things. This went on for about a year or two, and I became so terrified, I almost couldnt' function.
And I'd been praying and praying and praying and asking God for help to no avail.
Finally, one day my brother said, why don't you just sit down and really ask Jesus about it. I didnt' know Jesus at the time, but I didn't know I didn't know Him, but I prayed and asked Him why I was so afraid.
And He did answer me. He simply brought to mind the card game I'd been playing, and I knew instantly I had been caught up in occult activity. It was clear as a bell suddenly, and I immediately turned my back on it, and my fears vanished on the spot and I have never ever struggled with it since. I didn't become a Christian that day, but I knew Jesus had answered my prayer that day.
All of that to say, there may be a reason you are having these fears and don't realize it. Or, maybe Satan's just been playing with your mind and making you afraid on account of his vicious lies. You need to study the truth. The Lord Jesus Christ HImself and His word.
Hope this has been helpful to you.
