During the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, learned from reading the word of the LORD, as revealed to Jeremiah the prophet, that Jerusalem must lie desolate for seventy years. So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and fasting. I also wore rough burlap and sprinkled myself with ashes. Daniel 9:2-3 NLT

In yesterday’s scripture verse, you saw that the prophet Daniel was a devoted man of prayer. In today’s passage you’ll see that he was also devoted to the Word of God.

Daniel, who lived in Babylon during the Babylonian Exile, had read the inspired writings of the prophet Jeremiah, and he learned that the Jewish people’s seventy years of captivity would end and that they would return to their home in Jerusalem.

That had to be great news to the prophet, and you might think he would plan some kind of celebration. But instead, Daniel took the time to go to God with prayers of confession and pleas for His mercy and blessing on His people.

When you receive a promise straight from God’s written Word, how do you respond? Daniel’s example should encourage you to seek God all the more in prayer, knowing that He has something good for you. When you do that, you prepare your heart to receive His very best.

Prayer: Father in heaven, thank You for encouraging me and strengthening me in my prayer life through Your written Word. May I never neglect reading my Bible and applying it to my prayers.
