But you, O LORD, will sit on your throne forever. Your fame will endure to every generation. You will arise and have mercy on Jerusalem--and now is the time to pity her, now is the time you promised to help. Psalm 102:12-13

As the people of Jerusalem suffered and watched their confidence in the future fade away, they could only turn in one direction for their hope. The Lord was the one constant who couldn't be removed by war, famine, or plots of their enemies. The hope of Jerusalem in the future rested wholly on God's mercy and future action. As the people grasped just how powerless they were, they realized that the real hope for their lives came from God.

Tragedies will come. Your life will be disrupted in one way or another, if it hasn't been already. As you experience this loss and uncertainty, you'll also have an opportunity to trust more completely in God's enduring presence.

That isn't to say losses will be immediately replaced and difficulties will abruptly cease. The people of Israel waited an entire generation from Jerusalem to be restored. However, a season of loss and struggle is often the chance to gain clarity on what is unmovable, and to more fully trust in God.

Prayer: Lord, help me to depend more completely on You.
