And he saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them: and about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them. But when they saw him walking upon the sea, they supposed it had been a spirit, and cried out: For they all saw him, and were troubled. And immediately he talked with them, and saith unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid. And he went up unto them into the ship; and the wind ceased: and they were sore amazed in themselves beyond measure, and wondered. For they considered not [the miracle] of the loaves: for their heart was hardened. Mark 6:48-52

Professional fishermen are a tough bunch. Its hard work not suited to the lazy or the soft. If you were a fisherman in first century Palestine, you were usually a hardworking guy, made strong by a difficult life. In fact, just about everyone in the ancient world would be considered hardened by today's standards. It was often an unforgiving environment where only the hardy survived. That's when it's good to be hardened.

But it's not good to be hard when it comes to spiritual lessons. To be dull to the things God has made known about His power and provision is to miss the next lesson. The disciples were amazed that Jesus was walking on the water despite the fact that He had just fed thousands from a handful of food.

Are there lessons God has shown you that you haven't taken to heart yet?

Prayer: Jesus, help me to remember Your great deeds and to trust You for even more. Let me not be hard of heart.
