In counting the cost of following Jesus, His disciples could have focused only on what they stood to lose in terms of income, reputation, and proximity to their family. Losing one of those things would be difficult, but they risked losing all three at the same time. Yet they had faith that what they gained with Jesus could be much better.
Jesus assures you today that what you give up for His sake will pale in comparison to the community and new life you’ll find among God’s people and in the presence of the Lord. You stand to gain a peace today that no one can take away from you and a security for eternal life that is assured by the Holy Spirit. It’s true that you will lose things others who resist Jesus’ call will maintain, but when all is said and done, you will find yourself with greater peace and security.
Prayer: Jesus, help me to look to You in faith and trust as I count the cost of following You today.
