What Was the Religion of the Founders of the United States?

The word "religion" is an extremely loaded term in modern-day America. Various uses and misuses of this term leads to confusion and outright misinformation. Unfortunately, God is often equated in the same general idea as Islam, Christianity, Catholicism and similar, although Christians in particular should know better.

In the biblical book of "Acts", we find two different early Jesus followers, Stephen and Paul, both saying the same thing in regards to religion and God. According to both of them, God "does not live in temples made with hands." This represents a rejection of the world's religions, including all Greek and Roman religions, Judaism and later, religions like Christianity and Islam, all of which insist on constructing temples, cathedrals and similar inordinately expensive religious edifices.

Then again, more confusion arises over the First Amendment, which intention is clearly in regards to religious brand, separation of "church" and state. And which has no intention regarding God, who is mentioned 4-5 times in the Declaration as being separate and distinct from both human governments and "church", that is, from any religious brand.

More confusion arises when the so-called "founding fathers" are broad brushed as being "deists" by many historians and educators, when in fact few of them were. The only two primary founders who claimed to be deists were Thomas Paine and Benjamin Franklin; George Washington is said to have been influenced by deism and perhaps Jefferson as well. But then again, deism was defined far differently in the 18th Century than it is today.

Today, deism is usually defined as a belief in a Creator who after creating the cosmos, does not otherwise involve himself in the workings of the universe or the affairs of human beings. But upon reading the what the Declaration of Independence actually says, this is clearly not what a single Declaration signer believed. And self-anointed deist Benjamin Franklin, is said to have become angry during the Constitutional Convention because they were not seeking God's guidance enough; hardly a modern deist view.

Deism arose in 17th Century Europe and consisted of diverse intellectuals; a few were agnostic and atheistic, while the majority were Christians who were tired of religious orthodoxy. Deism in its 17th and 18th Century form, was in many ways an attempt to remove God from religious tradition and dogma and, place discussion of God under science and reason. This is a far cry from how discussion of God is treated today by the ACLU, the AUSCS, the Supreme Court and many other liars.

Although often branded a deist, Thomas Jefferson himself apparently didn't espouse any religion, although his family were members of the Church of England. Jefferson often read the Bible and his now famous statement, "that all men are created equal and, endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights. . ." traces directly to the New Testament, where educated and illiterate, rich and poor, slave and free, women and men and Jew and Gentile and everyone else are all treated as equals before God, "who is no respecter of persons."

According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, the majority of the American founders belonged to various brands of Christianity, while some were far more devout than others. Like is still true in parts of the American South, attending church on Sunday was as much a social occasion as a religious practice in 18th Century America and thus, many of the so-called 'christian' founders were not necessarily all that devoted.

Suffice it to say, as Thomas Jefferson may have grasped and most certainly, as the New Testament Paul taught, confusing Jesus with Christianity or any other religion is plainly wrong, simply based on what the New Testament actually says. While confusing God with the world's religions is plainly ignorant, as if the inventions of diverse peoples somehow equate to our father in heaven.

Dear @Richard Aberdeen
You seem eager to expand your knowledge, as long as you don’t let personal beliefs and subjectivity interfere with being objective in your learning should make you successful in your desires. Here's a list of some of the more prominent founding fathers of the American Revolution. Sometimes having an unbiased or preconceived stance of what is true historically can be a hinderance to true learning.

This link will take you to a site that can support the following table of certain founding fathers of the American Revolution, and where you will find that many had religious affiliations that you would recognize and some you probably won't recognize in this day and age. Among the larger group of signers and framers, Episcopalians/Anglicans formed the plurality, followed by Congregationalists and Presbyterians, with smaller numbers of Quakers, Lutherans, Dutch Reformed, Methodists, and a handful of Catholics. Pure Deists were actually rare among the political leadership (Thomas Paine is the clearest example, though not always counted as a core political Founder). Many key figures are better described as “theistic rationalists”—believing in an active, providential God known primarily through reason, while drawing selectively from Christian ethics.

Founding FatherFormal/Primary AffiliationNotes on Personal Beliefs
George WashingtonEpiscopalian (Anglican)Regular church attender and vestryman; emphasized Providence; private about core doctrines; often classified as theistic rationalist or “Christian Deist.”
John AdamsCongregationalist (later Unitarian)Rejected the Trinity and some orthodox doctrines; rationalist leanings while valuing Christianity’s moral principles.
Thomas JeffersonRaised Episcopalian/AnglicanStrongly rationalist/Deist-leaning; rejected miracles, the Trinity, and Jesus’ divinity; compiled the “Jefferson Bible” of Jesus’ moral teachings; advocated strict separation of church and state.
Benjamin FranklinRaised Presbyterian/Congregationalist; identified as DeistBelieved in a providential God and practical virtue; skeptical of orthodox dogma; supported religious tolerance and institutions.
James MadisonEpiscopalianPrivate about personal theology; Enlightenment-influenced; major architect of religious liberty and disestablishment.
Alexander HamiltonEpiscopalianMore conventional earlier and especially later in life (after personal tragedies); engaged with Christian themes.
John JayEpiscopalian/AnglicanOrthodox Christian; later president of the American Bible Society.

I was in the South growing up, where we visited the family farm every summer. I've witnessed the cancer of racism and human segregation up close and personal. I've also witnessed virtually the entire population attending church on Sundays, regardless of what they personally believed, because if one wanted to be successful in politics or business, church attendance was necessary.

This is precisely the same as it was in the early days of American society according to the Encyclopedia Britannica, where virtually everyone belonged to a Christian church, because one faced social ostracization for not doing so. Thomas Paine, for example, was accused of being an atheist because he hated Christianity, while his letters prove he was no atheist. According to Britannica, a significant percentage of early Americans were Christians in name only and were not devoted followers of Jesus or the Christian religion.

You are arguing against the historical reality of early America and the 1950's deep South, which I personally witnessed.

You make statements as if they are fact and are not. How you tell what people stood for is not only through their actions, but also their writings when the person is not accessible. Meaning dead and historically removed from you being able to do so and know firsthand.

Again, I know prejudice firsthand, and this was in the North!!! lol So, time, place, color, gives no face to racism for its face is colorless towards one and all brother. I mean you in another thread attack the GOP, but it's the DNC that is more focused on segregation now adays so don't bring that subject up! They appear to be reverting back to their roots appears. It's just the other way around this time and they'll justify it for that very reason.

As far as attending church, and not believing? Tell, me you don't believe that is also true even to this day??? So, nothing has changed, but then you can't use that against them, since all do fall short of the Glory of God, and whether they believed or not can only be seen through the prism of their actions and their heart which only God can look to and will one day and judge rightly. So, it seems that they putting their lives on the line to correct injustice and be free in the founding of this country, kind of speaks for itself, don't you thing?

What I presented to you was accumulated data that you can check. What you presented was purely opinion-based, relying on generalizations to back an argument that lacks substance and seems solely intended to rewrite history. I can appreciate your anger, having gone through your own experiences, but don't let it color who you are in Christ Jesus Brother. You are old enough to have seen and experienced the slings and arrows from the enemy. Don't let them pervert that new creation in Christ Jesus! You should be a warrior for Him, and not the ideologs in this world.

God bless you and yours.

I make statements based on my study for several decades of American science and history and world science and history. You make some of the least educated statements I am personally aware of, as if you just accept a worthless conservative religion without bothering to check out the historical and scientific knowledge for yourself.

The Britannica is often quoted by prominent historians and scientists and, is written by highly educated historians and scientists. It is overwhelmingly considered the best source for human knowledge. One would receive a far better education if they studied the Britannica, instead of throwing their money away on an American university.

You're a funny, old man! I get to say that since you're older by 5 years! :) Yeah, I know I'm a young ignorant whipper snapper! hehehe
I noticed you didn't address the bias you have! Maybe because you know its truth, and would rather ignore it then have to face up to it, in your advanced years...As far as Britannica, any bets on their stance on evolution vs God created existence? Sure, I've looked to it too in my younger years, but only in the context of worldly issues, but not when I can address it through Scripture. Which means very little from that source but instead the more specialized sources in the particular area of concern that with the technology out there now is readily available if you're willing to search for it.

Now you make an assessment of me while knowing very little if anything about my own walk in Christ or even in life in general. Hey, but I do the same with you Liberal Old Man from California. At least through the words you've posted, and how you treat others in responses who disagree with you that is. I see the liberal bent in almost everything you say, which I'm sure you wear as a badge of honor, but I don't hold that pride in your knowledge against you. It's part of who you are, and who you'll have to answer for being as you are one day. Just like me, and every other person, be they high or low!

That being said. I make no bones about being a simple man, and not an educated or scholarly individual. Count me as a simple fisher of men if you will and sadly, I do admit that I do it rather poorly. :(

So, now I'll await to see if you'll address your bias in an honest self assessment...without excuse of course, but something tells me I doubt you'll be able to do so without a few "buts" and "you haven't walked in my shoes/sandals" either kind of comments.... lol

You just posted a lie, that the DNC is more racist than the GOP. The GOP contains many White Supremists, including the racist and thief in the White House, who has made the most racist statement ever uttered by a president.

Trump has publicly said more than once that immigrants "are animals" and "they are poisoning our blood." There is no statement more racist than that.

Trump is quoting what Adolf Hitler said about the Jews. People who personally knew Trump have said that he used to keep a copy of Hitler's "Mein Kampf" by his bedside.

Both Trump and his father were fined by New York for refusing to rent to Black people. And Trump has also publicly stated that he wants more White immigrants like from Scandinavia.

Meanwhile, Trump is trying in every way he can to deport Black and Brown people, whether they are here legally or not.

For such an old man, you have no grace! In truth only God can love one such as you, though He tells me I should too. (Heavy sigh) Your self-righteousness would make you go to the mountain top standing tall, as a ruler, head above everyone else, instead of on your hands and knees, grateful for God's Mercy that He would bestow even to look in your direction and call you one of children in love instead of destroying you for your pride! Shame on you Richard!

Can racism be only white on black, or black on white, or yellow, brown in any combination you care to choose? Stupid man, racism is a condition of hate, and a lack of love for man/self, for being a creation of God in His image! Get your head out of the sand and see what it truly means to be a man of God! If you think only the GOP is racist, and the DNC is not, go back to school. Instead start praying and allow the Holy Spirit to guide you in truth!

As to my statement on segregation: Color me this Brother Richard: What is Race-based or "affinity" housing, lounges that you can find at schools not only here in the US, but even in Canada, which to me is no surprise! Well??? Another word for that is "Segregation"!!! Which I'm sure you are all for it, in your ideological blindness agree with it too!!! Who is pushing this??? Well, surely not the GOP, because as you well know they don't run the schools, but the liberal hive mind does, of which you can color them DNC stooges!!! Bah! Stupid man, and you've experienced instances of racism, and are now supporting those who would put you back in chains!!!

Go here and see what I am talking about and then say oh its a right-wing conspiracy! Stop being a tool for the liberal left, or for anyone right of Stalin! Just reading the title should inform you if you're as in touch as you believe, that it's true!!! Go to some of the schools mentioned and there are others that are not even mentioned, which might be located near where you live, that you can go see for yourself and see that it's true! I know the National Review is right but is also mostly factual in their reporting. Not that I read it much if at all. This as I've told you is easy to prove. Now the justification will have you seeing/saying "No it's not the same thing as segregation", while the truth is how'd that woman up in Alaska once said, "You can put lip stick on a pig, but it's still a pig".

Playing word games which is what both sides will do, though I would say the DNC is probably better at it. Let's see how sharp you really are. Take this statement and what would you make of it: It's like me saying that the US never participated in Slavery, because what they really did was actually forced unpaid labor....zzzzzz", That's what the liberal hivemind is doing with segregation! What they are really doing is, separating people by characteristics, be it racial, cultural and giving it a fancy name so the dumb people will gobble it up and say yummy, that's right, right on, let's put the whitey in their place!!! Well, guess what? That's segregation!!!

Richard if you are truly a believer in Christ Jesus then you have the Holy Spirit inside of you, to guide you, to see past these types of deceptions, but you must ask and be willing to get past previous hurts and pains you've experienced in your life! Be that New Creation in Jesus Brother, that God has meant you to be! Continue being DNC if that is your stick, or Independent. I'd say GOP, but I believe that would be pushing you to jump off a cliff! lol I'm actually an independent by the way! Just keep pointing wherever you find yourself that you rub elbows with towards Jesus! He is the only help there is Brother! That's what you should be doing anyway but being in the midst of them or wherever you happen to be, should give you access that other brothers & sisters in Christ Jesus don't have! It's always about opportunity, and stepping out in faith! Just don't be deceived by the rhetoric, because as they say, "The devil is in the details"!

That's a lie. I've known hundreds of liberals in my life and not a single one of them hated humanity. I've also known a great many conservatives who don't hate humanity, either. Trump on the other hand, only rarely has a nice thing to say about anybody other than his billionaire mega-donors and his family. He is particularly vulgar and caustic to women, especially educated women who apparently threaten his manhood.

Trump is the most thin-skinned politician I've ever witnessed. Previous presidents and most politicians expect the press to investigate them and ask them tough questions. But Trump can't keep himself from hating back at even the most obvious questions that the public deserve an answer to, especially from female reporters. Trump constantly lies and he knows he constantly lies, which apparently makes him extremely defensive and highly suspicious that just maybe, we the people understand that he's just a fraud.
