What the Heart Wants

"But the things that proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and those defile the man. Matthew 15:18

Many a man has gotten himself into trouble by embracing “the heart wants what the heart wants” mentality—as if Christians are to be slaves to their hearts’ desires. The problem with this thinking is that out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, and slanders.

Genesis 6:5 says that every intent of the thoughts of a man’s heart is only evil continually. And Jeremiah 17:9 says the heart is more deceitful than all else and is desperately sick. The heart does want what the heart wants, but that’s the problem. You can’t trust your heart. It only wants all sorts of evil. But that doesn’t mean that all is lost.

In the parable of the sower (Luke 8:15), Jesus explains that “the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and beat fruit with perseverance.” When your heart has the Word in it, it’s honest and good. Have you fallen victim to obeying your heart without first bringing it under the authority of the Word?
