"This day the LORD your God commands you to observe these statutes and judgments; therefore you shall be careful to observe them with all your heart and with all your soul. Deuteronomy 26:16 NKJV
Moses is calling the ancient Israelites to live up to the Lord God’s commands and promises.
Their response? “You have declared this day that the Lord is your God and that you will walk in obedience to him, that you will keep his decrees, commands and laws—that you will listen to him” (verse 17). Impressive!
The Lord’s incredible promises? First, that the Israelites will be His people and His greatly treasured possession. Second, “He has declared that he will set you in praise, fame and honor high above all the nations he has made” (verse 19). Third, that they will be a people holy and set apart to the Lord. Amazing!
Yet the rest of the Old Testament (Hebrew scriptures) tells a much different story.
Prayer: Lord, You want me to start well and—much more importantly—to live faithfully and finish well. I will stop assuming all that will just happen automatically. I hear Your warning loud and clear.
