What kind of a tree are you? The Bible talks about three different kinds.
Jesus mentions the trees that produce good fruit and bad fruit.
Matt 12:33 "Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for the tree is known by its fruit.
Matt 7:16 "You will know them by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes nor figs from thistles, are they?
Matt 7:17 "So every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit.
Matt 7:18 "A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a bad tree produce good fruit.
Matt 7:19 "Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
Matt 7:20 "So then, you will know them by their fruits.
Matt 7:21 "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter.
But he also mentions trees that bear no fruit at all (either good or bad).
Luke 13:5 "I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish."
Luke 13:6 And He began telling this parable: "A man had a fig tree which had been planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and did not find any.
Luke 13:7 "And he said to the vineyard-keeper, 'Behold, for three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree without finding any. Cut it down! Why does it even use up the ground?'
Luke 13:8 "And he answered and said to him, 'Let it alone, sir, for this year too, until I dig around it and put in fertilizer;
Luke 13:9 and if it bears fruit next year, fine; but if not, cut it down.'"
It seems in the parable above, God is willing to wait for a time to see if the tree will eventually start bearing fruit. But if it doesn't, it is eventually cut down.
It is notable that the tree that bears no fruit, is as bad or worse than the tree that bears bad fruit.
This is similar to the verses below.
Rev 3:15 'I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot; I wish that you were cold or hot.
Rev 3:16 'So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth.
Jude 1:12 These are the men who are hidden reefs in your love feasts when they feast with you without fear, caring for themselves; clouds without water, carried along by winds; autumn trees without fruit, doubly dead, uprooted;
A tree requires certain things to grow, first it needs water.
Jer 17:7 "Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD And whose trust is the LORD.
Jer 17:8 "For he will be like a tree planted by the water, That extends its roots by a stream And will not fear when the heat comes; But its leaves will be green, And it will not be anxious in a year of drought Nor cease to yield fruit.
If the tree has water, and deep roots, it will yield fruit.
John 15:4 "Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me.
John 15:5 "I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.
John 15:8 "My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples.
We see from the verses above Jesus is the water (of life) or the true vine. We can bear no fruit without him. Still, he uses us to bear fruit.
For example in the verses from Jeremiah above, the water alone doesn't bear fruit. The tree alone doesn't bear fruit.
God and Jesus don't need us in order to bear fruit, they are already righteous, besides they already have millions of good trees. That isn't the point.
The point is, God wants YOU to bear fruit.
The other thing that is required for things to grow, is sunlight. (or the light of the "son")
Eph 5:8 for you were formerly darkness, but now you are Light in the Lord; walk as children of Light
Eph 5:9 (for the fruit of the Light consists in all goodness and righteousness and truth),
Eph 5:10 trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord.
Eph 5:11 Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them;
Most things don't grow too well in darkness. Verse 9 above speaks of the fruit of the light.
So what happens to the trees that either don't bear fruit or bear bad fruit?
Luke 13:9; John 15:6; Matt 7:19
One thing I noticed about trees and fruit, they don't grow very fast.
You could take a picture of an apple tree on Monday morning at 10:00am, and maybe take another picture at 11:00am, chances are you won't notice ay difference.
Maybe you could even come back on Tuesday or Wednesday and take another picture. You probably won't see a lot of change.
But if you are patient, and you wait a few weeks, or maybe even a month or two...
Mat 3:8 "Therefore bear fruit in keeping with repentance;
Gal 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
Gal 5:23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
There are other fruits as well, but this is a good place to start.
Mat 13:23 "And the one on whom seed was sown on the good soil, this is the man who hears the word and understands it; who indeed bears fruit and brings forth, some a hundredfold, some sixty, and some thirty."
Mat 21:43 "Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people, producing the fruit of it.
