But Peter said, "By no means, Lord; for I have never eaten anything that is common or unclean." And the voice came to him again a second time, "What God has made clean, do not call common." Acts 10:14-15 ESV
The only thing that may have surprised Peter more than his unusual dream was its highly unexpected message that Jews and Gentiles were equally important to God. Peter had to quickly rethink his understanding of scripture.
The apostle Paul spent a good deal of time writing letters to Jewish Christians who were slow to catch on to this paradigm-shifting message. Despite not fully accepting the message of the dream, despite struggling to make sense of God making all people “clean,” Peter still followed God’s command.
Faith doesn’t assure us that everything will make sense right away. God may lead you in ways that seem confusing, or even appear to be contradictory. You may not know what is waiting on the other side. Perhaps God will surprise you. Are you willing to accept God’s judgment of others, believing Him when He calls them “clean”?
When you step into uncertainty, your faith will grow and your trust in God will develop. At a time when your steps only make sense to God, you are learning to submit your own wisdom and knowledge to His ways.
Prayer: Lord, I trust You to direct my steps today.
