For Ezra had set his heart to study the Law of the LORD, and to do it and to teach his statutes and rules in Israel. Ezra 7:10 ESV
The direction of Ezra’s life and the destiny of the people of Israel were determined in part by his heart’s desire to study the law of the Lord, to obey it in his life, and to teach others to obey it too. In a time of uncertainty and loss, he found stability in God’s unshakable message for his life.
The alternative to setting your heart toward something or setting a goal is living your life reacting to circumstances or seeking whatever feels good. Even when life becomes busy or overwhelming, having a “true north” can help you avoid mistakes, detours, and damage to your most important relationships.
While you may not have made a resolution to do something lately, is there something you are determined to do? Is there some change or long-term goal that drives you? Today’s passage is an invitation to resolve to know what God asks of you and then follow through in doing it. What you resolve to do today can have a major impact on the direction of both your own life and the lives of many people you know.
Prayer: Lord, help me to see Your teachings with clarity and to obey them with integrity.
