Oh, that my people would listen to me, that Israel would walk in my ways! Psalm 81:13
The way God deals with people changes over time. But because He is perfect and eternal, His desire for fellowship with mankind remains the same. It behooves us to endeavor to please God and enjoy His blessing.
As Christians, we know God at a more intimate level than did the ancient Israelites. They were His chosen nation and experienced many benefits from that status—but the work of Jesus Christ was still future, and the Holy Spirit did not yet make His home in human hearts. So, the Israelites often failed, sometimes spectacularly, as God cried out for them simply to do what He said.
That was God’s desire then; it’s still His passion now. We who know God the Father through God the Son, who entertain God the Spirit in our deepest inner being, should be even more committed to listening to Him and walking in His ways. Not to be saved—that’s purely a work of grace, through our faith in Jesus Christ. But because we are thankful, because we recognize how merciful God has been, because we want to honor our Lord, and because, in the long run, it’s by far the best thing for us.
We know God’s desires by the Word He’s given us. Listen to it and walk in His ways.
Prayer: Lord, guide me in Your ways. I want to please You.
