What does grieving the Holy Spirit mean?

"And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption." Ephesians 4:30

I'm not looking to stir up any controversy with this subject, I'm only asking questions, I'm not set in any view.

I just want to know, when you grieve the Holy Spirit, do you feel it physically? I only notice this specific pain inside when I'm not doing something God would want, and it gets so bad sometimes I just have to stop what I'm doing and ask God what's wrong, the pain disappears literally within seconds and He usually reveals what He wants when I'm really listening! I want to be absolutely sure, is this the Holy Spirit, is this what it means to grieve it? I realize God speaks to us all in different ways. Has anyone else felt what I'm talking about? I can't really place the exact location but it's physical, and the only place I can really pinpoint is my chest area, I don't have any heart problems, as it only happens when I disobey God. I dont know about that but from my honest experience i can tell that thinking contradictory to the thoughts suggested in the Bible : "Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. "
- (Php 4:8) is how to grieve the Holy spirit.

Rom 12:15 says weep with the weeping - but not cry about the crying. You see Holy spirit gives us joy over sorrow and yet we can weep with the weeping.

Maybe another verse that is related:
Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.
- (Joh 14:1)

I've pondered this grieving of the Holy Spirit on and off in my life. And prayed about it even more. I dont' know for sure but look forward to hearing other's thoughts.

Yes, I have felt what you described too. I am not sure whether I could say it applies to everyone; but when it happens to me I usually feel like the Spirit within me is grieved. It can happen to me when I say something or do something that is not what God wants..like a little warning to stop and rethink it..and sometimes when I sense that someone else is doing that. Sometimes I have felt it during a sermon that included something which did not glorify God. I feel it when I hear others demean Christians or when some post that way sometimes on the Internet.

It seems that what grieves the Lord Jesus Christ is then what grieves the Holy Spirit of God, seeing that the Holy Spirit is sent from the Father in the Name of the Son, who testifies of and glorifies Christ Jesus. Therefore we find in Mark 3:5 what grieves Christ, which the hardness of peoples hearts.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
