If I had cherished iniquity in my heart, the Lord would not have listened. But truly God has listened; he has attended to the voice of my prayer. Blessed be God, because he has not rejected my prayer or removed his steadfast love from me! Psalm 66:18-20 ESV
The Bible frequently describes the ways in which you reap what you sow. The Psalms expand on this idea by linking God’s attentiveness to your prayers to what you cherish in your heart. If you resist God and hold on to things He finds destructive or wrong, you can expect to find yourself wondering why He isn’t paying attention to your prayers.
However, that isn’t to say that a moment of prayer that feels frustrating or distant from God is inevitably linked with holding on to sinful desires. The Psalms also mention plenty of desperate pleas for God to pay attention and to hear one’s prayers.
God cannot reject His own children or withdraw His love from them, but persistence and patience may be required in prayer. Psalm 66 may be most useful as a kind of checklist for moments of difficulty in prayer. If your mind and your heart are devoted to God, then you need only hold fast and wait on the Lord.
Prayer: Help me, Lord, to assess my thoughts and desires so that I can pray to You in peace and confidence.
