What Are You Storing Away?

"But God said to him, 'Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?' "So [is] he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God." Luke 12:20-21 NKJV

At what point did the rich man’s material abundance become a trap keeping him from the abundance of God? Perhaps that line is different for every person, but at a certain point, the man made himself a servant to his wealth and personal security and not to God. As he prepared larger and larger barns for his own personal enjoyment and comfort, he failed to see the ways he had lost sight of God and became bankrupt.

How can you avoid the kinds of traps that ensnared the rich man consumed with building bigger barns? Perhaps one place to start is to consider your abundance and security as resources to share with others. Your abundant “harvest” can be put to better use blessing others—like when John the Baptist commanded those with two jackets to share with those who had none (Luke 3:11).

You can also watch for ways wealth distracts you from God. Like the man who spent so much time building new barns, the use of money can lead to more diversions and expenses that draw your attention away from the wealth of God’s present love and mercy.

Prayer: Jesus, help me to become rich toward God today.
