Hebrews 10:30-39 BSB (Berean Standard Bible)
30For we know Him who said, “Vengeance is Mine; I will repay,” and again, “The Lord will judge His people.” 31It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
32Remember the early days that you were in the light. In those days, you endured a great conflict in the face of suffering. 33Sometimes you were publicly exposed to ridicule and persecution; at other times you were partners with those who were so treated. 34You sympathized with those in prison and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, knowing that you yourselves had a better and permanent possession.
35So do not throw away your confidence; it holds a great reward. 36You need to persevere, so that after you have done the will of God, you will receive what He has promised. 37For,
“In just a little while,
He who is coming will come and will not delay.
38But My righteous one will live by faith;
and if he shrinks back,
I will take no pleasure in him.”
39But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls.
Our Purpose
We are not saved from our sins and have eternal life with God so that we can glide through life just doing what our flesh desires. God did not put us on this earth to serve ourselves, but to serve Him with our lives. We are not here for our own pleasure but that we might please God with our lives. Life is not to be easy and comfortable for us so that we never suffer for the sake of righteousness. So, as followers of Christ we are called of God to deny self, die to sin, suffer for the sake of righteousness, and to obey His commands.
Therefore, we cannot just make a profession of faith in Jesus Christ and then continue to live for ourselves for our own sinful and/or selfish pleasures. By biblical faith in Jesus Christ, which comes from God and not from ourselves, we are crucified with Christ in death to sin and raised with Christ to walk in newness of life in Him, no longer to live as slaves to sin but now as servants of righteousness in holy living, in the power of God, by His grace. And now we are to follow our Lord wherever He leads us in doing what He desires.
Changing Course
Some people professing faith in Jesus Christ never did change course. Outwardly they may have done some “good things,” but inwardly their hearts did not change, and so secretly they continued in deliberate and habitual sin against God. Others may have changed course, and they may have walked the walk for a period of time, but then they may have fallen back into sin and so they were or they are presently in need of repentance and renewed faith in the Lord in walks of obedience to His commands.
And then there are those who are like the church in Laodicea, neither on fire for the Lord nor totally against Him, but they are lukewarm. It isn’t that they are doing anything really bad, but they aren’t doing anything regarded as truly “good” in the eyes of the Lord, either. So we read in Revelation 3 that God was about to spit them out of His mouth. So maybe you are a “good person” and you are not deep into addiction to sin, but you are lazy and self-serving. God wants to light a fire under you to get you moving forward.
The Gospel
For, the gospel of Christ is not an invitation to make a profession of faith in the Lord Jesus while you ignore Him and His commands and while you chart your own course and go your own way. Jesus died on that cross to put our sins to death with him so we will die to sin and walk in obedience to our Lord and to His commands. “Faith” without obedience to God is not biblical faith which saves. For faith = obedience, and disobedience = unbelief. And if anyone convinces you otherwise, they are lying to you. Believe the truth!
So, what’s this teaching us? It is teaching us that we must live for the Lord, that we must obey His commands, that we must walk in His ways and follow Him wherever He leads us in doing whatever He has called us to do, as His followers. We must not get lazy and shrink back from doing the will of God. The New Testament Scriptures are filled with instructions for those who profess faith in Jesus Christ with regard to how we must conduct our lives. Our lives must be sold out to God to doing His will from now to the end.

“Fill me with Your Spirit; help me to love others;
Let me know Your power; be an overcomer.
Show me how to follow Jesus Christ, my Savior;
Be His faithful servant to obey Him always.
“Lead me with Your presence; help me know the right way;
Teach me love and kindness, generous compassion.
Give me grace and courage to be Jesus’ witness,
Teaching His salvation to a world who needs Him.”
Won’t you come and follow Jesus Christ, your Savior?
He died so you’d be free of control of your sin;
Free to follow His ways in complete surrender;
Living sacrifices – let His grace transform you.

When we accept God’s invitation to his great salvation by his grace, through faith in Jesus Christ, who died on the cross for our sins, he indwells us with his Holy Spirit. We now have the Spirit of God within us leading, guiding, counseling, helping and directing us in the ways of the Lord and...
