“Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we exult in hope of the glory of God. And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.” (Romans 5:1-5 NASB1995)

What is faith? Well, biblical faith comes from God, it is gifted to us by God, it is not of our own flesh, and it is persuaded of God as to his righteousness and holiness, and of our sinfulness, and of God’s requirements and of our need to die with Christ to sin, not just once, but daily, and to walk daily (in conduct, in practice) in obedience to our Lord and to his commands. By faith in Christ we surrender our lives to the will of God, we submit to his Lordship (rulership) over our lives, and we commit to serving him with our lives.

And if this is the faith that we have, then as servants of the Lord, not only will we be living the Christian life and practice, in the power of God, although not necessarily with absolute perfection, but we will be sharing the truth of the gospel of our salvation with the people of the world. And if the gospel we are sharing is the same one taught by Jesus and by his New Testament apostles, then we will face the same kinds of persecutions, trials, and tribulations as what Jesus and his apostles faced for the sake of the gospel.

But just be aware that this can be faked, too. There are people out there who are teaching a false gospel to the people who might fake being persecuted to gain popularity and sympathy and to attract more people to their cause, and to lead people to believe that they are teaching the true biblical gospel, which is the reason for their persecution. But please don’t go around accusing people falsely of this, but just be aware that there are a lot of people out there who are con men (and women) disguised as Christians.

But thank the Lord there are genuine servants of the Lord Jesus who are truth tellers and who are those who are calling out and refuting the lies which are being spread in the name of Christ and of his gospel message. And that is why they are being mistreated, falsely accused of wrong, excluded, rejected, mocked, laughed at, ignored and treated as though they are the enemy, when they are speaking the truth of God’s word and are refuting the lies for the good of the people, and for their salvation from sin.

But when we go through these trials and tribulations, not all of which are persecutions, but some of which are physical ailments, or loss of income, or the death of loved ones, or having an illness that leads to death, or being in an auto accident, or experiencing food poisoning, or whatever the trial may be, we should thank the Lord, knowing these are ultimately for our good. For they produce in us perseverance, proven character and hope, and they teach us humility and dependence on our Lord in all things, which is for our good.

Blessed are you when you’re persecuted
Because of your faith in Jesus Christ.
Blessed are you when people insult you,
And falsely say what leads folks to doubt.
Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is
Great in the heavens. You’re not alone.

When you are persecuted in one place,
Flee to another. God will be there.
You will be hated by all the nations
Because you testify of God’s grace.
Many will seize you and persecute you,
And put to death the foll’wers of Christ.

Yet do not fear what humans may do to you,
For I’m with you all through the night.
I tell you, love your enemies with my love,
And forgive as I forgave you.
Pray for those who do evil against you.
Rest in my love and grace from above.
