I had read one of Chad's posts on the parable of the fig tree, and the letter another wrote he provided. One thing in particular in that letter that upset me was the writer's generalization of Israel being the blame for our Lord Jesus' crucifixion.
In Acts 2 on Pentecost Apostle Peter said this:

14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words:

It's common for many Christian brethren to write how Israel was to blame for our Lord Jesus' death. It is assumed even to be all Israel, when all too often the specifics written in Scripture are missed. It's true that one who accomplices in a murder also has a part in that murder. But can all Israel be held as an accomplice in that event? When Peter said that above he was being very specific to the men of Israel that were at Judea-Jerusalem who actually saw what our Lord Jesus did at His first coming. Those specific men Peter addressed were witnesses, yet rejected our Lord Jesus, and agreed to have Him delivered up to be crucified.
One of the doctrines of men I've heard going around (but not on this forum) is the idea that we all... were responsible for Christ's death on the cross. It's put forth as if anyone who ever sinned is responsible, regardless of not being part of that group Peter addressed. If you hear your pastor preach that kind of thing he needs correction, because God's Word is specific on who is assigned the blame for having our Lord Jesus crucified, just as Peter was specific about those men of Israel in Judea-Jerusalem that were there to witness those events.
The fact of this matter is that the majority of the children of Israel were not even present in the holy lands at our Lord Jesus' first coming and crucifixion. This is the Bible history that many of my Christian brethren have missed. And I'm going to explain how this was, and why it is Biblically wrong to blame all Israel in general. This involves the matter Apostle Paul called "the mystery of iniquity" in 2 Thessalonians 2:7. So if it's hard for your ears to hear about the negative side of God's Plan, i.e., that "determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God" Peter mentioned, then you might ought quit reading this now.
Per Old Testament history, God through Moses had told the children of Israel to literally and completely destroy the specific nations of the Canaanites when they entered into the lands of promise under Joshua. Early in Genesis 15 God had told Abraham how the "iniquity of the Amorites" was not yet full, which was around 430 years prior to Moses. (The Amorites were one of those Canaanite nations God later commanded to be destroyed per Deut.20:16-18.) So those Canaanite nations had 430 years to repent of their abominations and worship of pagan gods and idols, yet they did not.
God had warned the children of Israel to not dwell with those Canaanites, because they would cause Israel to go after their false gods and abominations. (There was also the problem of the giants there mixed among those Canaanite nations.) In Jude 1 part of the "mystery of iniquity" is revealed about this, because in Jude 1:4 we are told "For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ." Simply, some men upon this earth were ordained by God to the condemnation of being against Him and His Son. That ordaining is what the "mystery of iniquity" Apostle Paul mentioned in passing is about. It is also what Apostle John's teaching about the "many antichrists" is about (1 John 2:18). This mystery has continued also down to our times today.
But what happened? Did the children of Israel obey God in that destruction of the Canaanites? No. They failed to accomplish it. Per Judges 2 and 3, Israel allowed the leftovers of those Canaanites to dwell among them in their lands. Some of those Canaanites, once they understood God had given the children of Israel power over them, disguised themselves as foreigners traveling from a far away land and made a pact of protection with Joshua prior to their discovery (Joshua 9). Because of the children of Israel's failure to obey God in that matter God said He would leave those Canaanites among His people as a thorn in Israel's side, to try them to see if His children would follow Him or not (Judges 2 and 3).
Some might be thinking this is not an important matter for today, and that I'm generalizing peoples much like the writer of that letter did concerning Israel causing Christ's death which I spoke of in the beginning. I assure I am not, and Bible history of the ways and methods of those Canaanites that dwelt among the children of Israel is proof of it. But did some of them possibly turn to The LORD and worship Him in sincerity and truth? No doubt that was possible, yes. This is why we are not to go off on an identity fixation of the "tares" mixed in among the good wheat per our Lord Jesus' parable of the tares of the field in Matthew 13. Per that parable we simply are to know and understand they exist, and that they are here to work the negative side of God's Plan for this world. That includes understanding how this "mystery of iniquity" came about so we as believers on Christ Jesus don't fall into the same traps by those "workers of iniquity" as the children of Israel did.
How The Mystery of Iniquity Crept Into Israel to Cause Christ's Death And Scatter God's Chosen People:
I've already covered some of the start of that in the previous paragraphs concerning the Canaanites in Old Testament history. That creeping in among the children of Israel did not end with the Canaanites of Joshua's day though. In 1 Kings 9 during Solomon's reign we discover the bondservants to Israel named as those leftovers of the Canaanite nations. Solomon himself fell away from God by taking wives and concubines of them, allowing them to keep their pagan gods and idols while dwelling among Israel (1 Kings 11 forward). What God had warned the children of Israel about all the way back in the days of Moses, Joshua, and the judges with allowing those Canaanites to dwell among them, turning their hearts away from The True God instead to paganism, thus continued.
Because of Solomon allowing it to continue, and even taking wives and concubines of them, God split Israel into two separate kingdoms after Solomon's reign. God chose one of the tribe of Ephraim to be head over the majority of the children of Israel in the northern lands, called the "house of Israel" and "kingdom of Israel" at that time in God's Word. Only the tribes of Judah and Benjamin remained under Solomon's son's reign and their kingdom then was called "the house of Judah" and "kingdom of Judah" in God's Word. God told Jeroboam of Ephraim that He would give him ten tribes if he would follow Him, then the kingdom of Israel became that northern ten-tribed kingdom under Jeroboam of Ephraim. Solomon's son Rehoboam then joined the tribes of Judah and Benjamin in the south together to do battle with Jeroboam and the ten tribes in the north, to bring the kingdom back together as a whole and under reign at Jerusalem by him as a descendent of the house of David. God told Solomon's son this matter was of Him, and to not war against his brethren in the northern kingdom of Israel. But did the pagan influence of the Canaanite abominations continue among them? Yes.
When Jeroboam of Ephraim took reign over the "kingdom of Israel" in the north, he feared the people would join back with Rehoboam's "kingdom of Judah" in the south at Jerusalem-Judea, and by that conquer. So Jeroboam of Ephraim set up golden calf idol worship in two areas in the northern lands, one at Bethel and the other at Dan. He then commanded the ten tribes to worship those idol calves instead of going down to Jerusalem to worship as they were then required. This caused the Levites that dwelt among the northern ten tribes to be out of a job, so they went down south to Judea and joined with Rehoboam's kingdom of Judah. Other small remnants of the northern ten tribes also left the north and traveled south to join with Judah at Jerusalem. The capital city over Jeroboam's northern kingdom of Israel became Samaria.
So now we see a political head which God had placed in power over the kingdom of Israel (Jeroboam), used false religious worship of the Canaanite ways as a political ploy to turn God's people away from Him, specifically the northern ten tribes of Israel which made up the majority of the children of Israel in that time. Because of this, God would later bring the kings of Assyria upon that northern kingdom of Israel and remove them all out of the northern lands, captive to Assyria and the land of the Medes in the north. Only the kingdom of Judah in the south at Jerusalem remained faithful to God at that time. Thus the Canaanite influence and God's people allowing it caused Him to cast away the majority of His children, the ten tribes of Israel, to live among the Gentile nations because of not heeding His warnings of Deuteronomy 4 & 28.
But did the Canaanite influence continue, even with the kingdom of Judah that was yet faithful when God cast out the ten tribes? Yes, about a hundred years later the kingdom of Judah also began to turn away from our Heavenly Father and instead to the ways of the Canaanites as He had warned. And for this reason He brought Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, upon Judea to destroy its cities including Jerusalem, and take those of the kingdom of Judah captive to Babylon. These who went captive were mostly of the tribes of Judah, Benjamin, and Levi, and some leftover remnants of the ten tribes who joined with them when Jeroboam setup golden calf idols, along with foreigners that dwelt among them. God told them to go captive to Babylon and they would be taken care of, to not resist Him in that. The ten tribes remained in captivity to Assyria and areas of the Medes north of Babylon, never to return to the holy lands, even to this day (thus the idea of the 'ten lost tribes of Israel').
God told those of the kingdom of Judah that went captive to Babylon that it would be for seventy years. After that period He promised a remnant of them would return to Jerusalem and rebuild, which is when Jerusalem, the wall, and the second temple were built. These of the "house of Judah" that went captive to Babylon became known as the Jews. Per the Jewish historian Josephus the title Jew came from the name of the tribe Judah, and was the name which all these used, including the foreigners that dwelt among them in Judea. Per Ezra 2 we are given a list of who all returned to Jerusalem-Judea from that Babylon captivity after the seventy years. It was only a very small remnant of the tribes of Judah, Benjamin, and Levi. None of the ten tribes are listed for they were still in their own captivity. Did the Canaanite influence continue with those that returned from Babylon? Yes.
In Ezra 2 we are shown peoples that were foreigners which returned with the "house of Judah" to Jerusalem. Some of them were called Nethinims, which means given to temple service. Do you recall those bondservants of the Canaanite leftovers which Israel allowed to remain dwelling among them per 1 Kings 9 in Solomon's days? The existence of the Nethinims reveals those bondservants had worked their way up into the temple duties which only the sons of Levi were to perform. Other foreigners listed in Ezra 2 were priests, their genealogy of Israel could not be found. So not only had those Canaanites worked their way into temple service duties, but into the priest's office also. Moreover, Ezra was then told that even the leaders of the returning remnant of Israel were chief violators against God's command to not join with the Canaanites, and had taken wives of the Canaanites, even had children by them. The people then promised to put away their wives of Canaanites and their children from them, but this was not fully accomplished.
How bad did this Canaanite creeping in among the returned remnant of the house of Judah (the Jews) then become? Per 1 Chronicles 2:55 about the Kenites, they became the scribes in Israel dwelling in the city of Jabez. Per Genesis 15 the Kenites were a people of the Canaanite nations and not of Israel. The duties of the scribes of Israel involved keeping the copies of God's Holy Writ and also interpretation of the jots and tittles, massorah, etc. So by this time, some of the Canaanites had crept into the offices of scribe and priest over the children of Israel. What later events do you think that prepared for?
This is why our Lord Jesus continually rebuked the scribes and Pharisees so harshly who sought to murder Him. In Matthew 23 when He said all the blood of the prophets would come upon this generation, He was speaking to the families of the Canaanites that crept in which throughout Israel's history had caused them to fall away from our Heavenly Father, and thus sought to kill any prophet which God sent to His chosen people Israel. This is why our Lord Jesus would label those with "Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?" (Matt.23:33). By generation He meant family, like offspring, and He was pointing to the "certain men crept in unawares" of Jude 1 "who were before of old ordained to this condemnation". Did our Lord Jesus rebuke all the Jews among the Pharisees? No, for even Nicodemus came to Him in sincerity and provided spices for His burial. And we know He used Apostle Paul in service of The Gospel when before Paul of the tribe of Benjamin had been one of the Pharisees, and even held the coats of those who stoned Christ's saint Stephen.
Per Bible history concerning Edom, God gave Edom into Israel's hand, destroying Edom which was a kingdom from Esau's children south of Judea. The children of Edom then moved to Judea and became religious Jews, and mixed among the house of Judah. Some of these of Esau would become high priests of Israel. One like Herod would become appointed king over Judea by the pagan Romans. And we know per Genesis 36 that Esau took wives of the Canaanites.
These are the main groups which our Lord Jesus and John the Baptist held responsible for deceiving the rest of the Jews which were of the seed of Israel. Our Lord Jesus when He warned in Matthew 23, "Behold, the scribes and Pharisees sit in Moses' seat", this is what He was then warning His people of Israel about, i.e., the crept in unawares among them. The idea of Moses' seat they held meant the position of the law. These were the teachers of doctrine among the Jewish people then, so do you think they taught the people to recognize our Lord Jesus' first coming to Jerusalem??? No, they lied to the people and taught the rest of the Jews that He was a seditionist come to overthrow the government and pervert the law of Moses. These are the ones that sent their own men with Judas to the garden of Gethsesame to sieze our Lord Jesus to be delivered to the Romans to be crucified. This is how the stage was set for our Lord Jesus Christ's crucifixion, and who those were that were the driving force behind it among the Jews. They were in control, in power, over the people then.
So the next time you hear someone include all Israel being responsible for our Lord Jesus' crucifixion, you should remember this history if you have a mind to verify it in your own Bible study, and be careful who you might accidentally pin that blame upon, for our LORD showed us who was to blame and how, but not necessarily why those Canaanite crept in unawares were ordained to that condemnation.

One like Herod would become appointed king over Judea by the pagan Romans. And we know per Genesis 36 that Esau took wives of the Canaanites.
These are the main groups which our Lord Jesus and John the Baptist held responsible for deceiving the rest of the Jews which were of the seed of Israel. Our Lord Jesus when He warned in Matthew 23, "Behold, the scribes and Pharisees sit in Moses' seat", this is what He was then warning His people of Israel about, i.e., the crept in unawares among them. The idea of Moses' seat they held meant the position of the law. These were the teachers of doctrine among the Jewish people then, so do you think they taught the people to recognize our Lord Jesus' first coming to Jerusalem??? No, they lied to the people and taught the rest of the Jews that He was a seditionist come to overthrow the government and pervert the law of Moses. These are the ones that sent their own men with Judas to the garden of Gethsesame to sieze our Lord Jesus to be delivered to the Romans to be crucified. This is how the stage was set for our Lord Jesus Christ's crucifixion, and who those were that were the driving force behind it among the Jews. They were in control, in power, over the people then.
So the next time you hear someone include all Israel being responsible for our Lord Jesus' crucifixion, you should remember this history if you have a mind to verify it in your own Bible study, and be careful who you might accidentally pin that blame upon, for our LORD showed us who was to blame and how, but not necessarily why those Canaanite crept in unawares were ordained to that condemnation.
