So Saul died for his breach of faith. He broke faith with the LORD in that he did not keep the command of the LORD, and also consulted a medium, seeking guidance. He did not seek guidance from the LORD. Therefore the LORD put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse. 1 Chronicles 10:13-14 ESV

King Saul serves as a long-standing example of how not to live the life of faith. He failed to wait for Samuel, as he had been instructed, before offering an unauthorized sacrifice, and he spared the Amalekites when he had been instructed not to. Today’s verses add another grave sin to the list; he consulted a medium, seeking guidance, rather than seeking the guidance of the Lord.

A Christian would do well to ask himself if there are any commands in scripture that he is willfully disobeying—in addition to asking himself where he is seeking guidance. If the answer to either of those self-tests is incorrect, he is in jeopardy of stumbling. Saul died for his breach of faith. Your consequences might not be so severe, but they might cost you more than you would ever dream of paying in your relationships, work situation, or even freedom.

Micah 6:8 explains how to stay on track spiritually: “He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”

Prayer: Lord, may I walk humbly with You today.
