Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, And He who formed you from the womb: "I [am] the LORD, who makes all [things], Who stretches out the heavens all alone, Who spreads abroad the earth by Myself; Who frustrates the signs of the babblers, And drives diviners mad; Who turns wise men backward, And makes their knowledge foolishness; Isaiah 44:24-25 NKJV

On this day in 1940, a fan at the University of California’s Memorial Stadium ran onto the field thinking he could help his team stop Michigan’s Tom Harmon from scoring, but he failed to tackle Harmon who scored on the play.

Paul wrote that the Galatian believers thought their human efforts could help God out. “How foolish can you be? After starting your new lives in the Spirit, why are you now trying to become perfect by your own human effort?” (Galatians 3:3). They thought they could win for God by requiring believers to practice aspects of Old Testament law.

Dreaming of stardom, most men feel they can improve employment situations, family dynamics, and relational conflicts with their own cunning and intelligence. But Isaiah cautions that God “overthrows the learning of the wise and turns it into nonsense.” Those who try to improve the score by relying on their own effort usually miss the tackle and end up fighting sleepless nights and the fears that come with misdirected efforts. Been there?

Paul, Isaiah, and Solomon show that listening to your coach, to “the Maker of all things,” means that “you can go to bed without fear; you will lie down and sleep soundly” (Proverbs 3:24). That’s a win!

Prayer: Father, help me to listen rather than trust my own efforts.
