The Holy Spirit is the One Who helps us understand Scripture. We were all born with a sinful nature. We lived in spiritual darkness until the Holy Spirit brought the light of Christ into our hearts. As Christians, we depend on the Holy Spirit to illuminate our minds as we read Scripture. He awakens us to the truth. He alerts us to its promises and challenges us with its commands. The Holy Spirit is involved in every single aspect of our reading of the Scripture.

When the Holy Spirit inspired the Bible, He did so by working through the minds of the prophets and apostles who wrote it. In the same way, the Person of the Holy Spirit works through our careful and diligent study of the Scripture. Every time you study the Bible, God's Word comes to live in your heart. Then the Helper, the Holy Spirit, will remind you of God's Word in your daily situations.
(John 14:25-26)-These things I have spoke to you while being present with you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.

When I read the Bible, it takes me in, so that I find my place inside it. It calls for a slow and searching read, one where the primary reader, (me) isn't even my own mind but the Spirit of God inside of me. It is a reading of partnership, a realization that the same Spirit of God Who inspired these words so many years ago is the same Spirit of God alive in me, interpreting them not merely on the paper in front of me, but from deep within my being as well.

Some tips on reading the Bible:
-Read slower and read smaller sections, maybe even only a few verses at a time.
-Read it and let it read you.
-Remind yourself that you aren't the only one involved in the act. The Holy Spirit is present and He wants to speak.
-Leave as much time in silence after yon've finished reading to listen to the Spirit.

Lord, You sent the Holy Spirit to dwell within our hearts the moment we accepted You as our Savior. May He guide us into all truth and understanding of Scripture. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.

Love in Christ,
Jan :)
