There are two characteristics that God has imputed unto man since the time of His creating the world; which is “Sin” and “Righteousness.”

The definition of imputation is:

G3049 (impute)
logizomai
Middle voice from G3056; to take an inventory, that is, estimate (literally or figuratively): - conclude, (ac-) count (of), + despise, esteem, impute, lay, number, reason, reckon, suppose, think (on).

When God created Adam in His image and likeness, Adam was created in Righteousness. There was no need to impute Righteousness unto a Righteous man who was perfect in character and conduct. When Adam ended up in disobedience, God imputed sin unto Adam because of his disobedient works which was contrary to the commandment/law of God.

1Ti 2:14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.

God imputes Sin or Righteousness unto those He wills to conclude Righteous or Sinful according to His purpose and understanding of life; not mans.

Rom 9:15 For he (God) said to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.

Rom 9:16 So then it is not of him that wills, nor of him that runs, but of God that shows mercy.

Another translation:

Rom 9:16 (HCSB) So then it does not depend on human will or effort, but on God who shows mercy.

Why didn’t God impute sin unto Eve? Why didn’t God have compassion and show mercy unto Adam? It was the woman that transgressed the law first. Eve knew she was not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; but God imputed sin unto Adam instead of Eve who ate of the tree first.

We know that under the Abrahamic Covenant God chose not to impute sin unto Abraham (Rom. 5:13). Abraham did sin in things that were not pleasing to God (as we understand sin), but God chose not to impute sin unto him; why?

God did not impute sin unto any man between the time of Adam until the Mosaic Law; why? (Rom. 5:13)
