Better [is] a little with the fear of the LORD, Than great treasure with trouble. Proverbs 15:16 NKJV
The first-century Roman philosopher Seneca once wisely observed, “For many men, the acquisition of wealth does not end their troubles, it only changes them.” Since the days of Seneca, many men—including some very godly men—have made similar observations.
Today’s proverb is one of many that presents readers with a dichotomy—this one between a life of true contentment in knowing and honoring God and a life of great material wealth but without true peace. This verse challenges its readers to consider which life they want to pursue.
The Bible does not condemn working hard to acquire material wealth. Instead, it enjoins godly men to make sure they pursue first the things that will last beyond this life.
Having much material wealth could lead you into a life of trouble and turmoil. But living a life that honors God will spare you from much trouble and lead you to true peace and contentment. Knowing your options, which life do you want to pursue?
Prayer: Father, I want to live a life that pleases You in every way. That means I need to be careful not to put my focus on worldly wealth but instead to love and serve You with everything I am and have. When I do that, I’m a truly rich man.
