24; But the boat was already a long distance from the land, battered by the waves; for the wind was contrary. 25 And in the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea.
26 When the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out in fear. 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.”
This passage has been discussed numerous times here on TalkJesus, but as usual, whenever I read it, I see a new perspective. But as we know, a storm comes up, the waves batter the boat, the wind is blowing the boat around.
28 Peter said to Him, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” 29 And He said, “Come!” And Peter got out of the boat, and walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But seeing the wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” 31 Immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and took hold of him, and said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”
Now typically when we read this, it's about Peter (not to mention Jesus) walking on the water. We all know the part where Peter took his eyes off Jesus and looked at the storm, the wind and the waves, and started to lose a little faith.
32 When they got into the boat, the wind stopped.
This is the verse that sticks out to me today. After Peter gets back in the boat, the storm stops. Have you ever stopped to consider this. Why didn't the storm stop once Peter started walking on the water, or better yet, before he got out of the boat.
It seems that Jesus Himself stopped this storm, why couldn't He have done so, before Peter stepped out of the boat.
33 And those who were in the boat worshiped Him, saying, “You are certainly God’s Son!”
Sometimes when God tests us, He tests us in the storm. Now maybe if the water would have been calm, Peter wouldn't have been distracted by the storm. But that would have been too easy.
It's easy for us to say "Once things settle down, I will do this for Jesus, or that for God, or something for the church, or maybe when things settle down, I will start witnessing to people".
Maybe God doesn't want things to settle down. Maybe He wants you to do this in the storm. Maybe He wants you to do it the hard way, so you will depend on Him.
Anyone can do things the easy way. But only with Gods help can we do things the hard way.
Ever wonder why you keep going through the same tests over and over again? Life keeps throwing the same problems at you every day? Maybe God wants you to pass this test while conditions aren't perfect.
