Travelling/Time Zone Question

Hello my brothers and sister in the Lord, I am very confused about this topic, our teacher gave this question, may I know what the right answer is plus the equation how you came up with the answer?

In the second day of March at 10:50am, you left Manila, Philippines on a plane headed to San Francisco, California. What time and day did you arrive in San Francisco, CA if the travel time was 28 hours?

Do time zones factor in? In my map, it says when I cross the DLT(not sure if it is called DLT) going to the west, I should advance one day, so time zones does not factor in? Please help, thank you and God bless

Yes, you would have to take into account the time zones in your answer.

You actually loose that day, not gain it. And here, we call it IDL (Intern. Date Line)

When you cross the IDL, you back up a day. Manila is ahead of San Francisco.

So in Manila when it's 7am on March 3rd, it's 4:00pm in San Francisco on March 2nd.

You could look at a world time zone online. But you probably already know that.

Now you have to figure out the rest :wink:

I read a Novel many years ago....'Round the World in 80 Days' The chap involved, a gentleman Phileas Fogg and his manservant, Passepartout, returning to London thought he he had lost his wager of £20,000.

In his London house the next day, he apologises to Aouda for bringing her with him, since he now has to live in poverty and cannot financially support her. In my map, it says I'm going to advance a full day if I cross the IDL, so when I will calculate the exact time I have to factor in, the time zone difference + (+1 or -1 day or 24hours) for crossing the IDL + travel time?

Sorry, just really trying to clear this all up because my Teacher seems to be teaching the wrong calculation on this because she said it is solely based on the IDL, not on the travel time, so she meant that time doesn't run when you're flying? Seems wrong.

Is it okay if you make a calculation on the problem given so I can understand better? Thank you very much. God bless you more and more.

Well, I can't speak for what your teacher said, since I didn't hear it myself.

She might be having a little fun with you too, in how she's wording.. what she's saying.. to you :wink:

First consider this: If it takes 28hrs to reach your destination in San Francisco,
you have therefore gained a day (24hrs + 4 more hours).


Next consider this: Time tavel doesn't change for the IDL. Lets say you took a boat from 1 island to get to another..
and it took 3 hrs to do it, and you crossed the IDL while sailing.
It still took 3 hrs to get from 1 island to the other, regardless of the IDL.

So if it takes 28 hrs to reach where ever your going.. it takes 28hrs to reach.. where ever your going. Right?

So here's how I figure..

Look at what time it is in S.F., at the moment you leave Manila,
and add 28 hrs to that time, and I believe you'll have your answer. :shock-animated:
