I would like to memorize parts of the Scriptures and am wondering if anyone might be willing to help me translate the parts I am interested in into modern English?
I know that this sort of thing has been done a thousand times before but as Luke said at the beginning of Luke...it seems good to me to do it...again LOL.
It's actually a wonderful thing to dig into the King James to bring it up to modern English in that it makes me really think about what is said even more.
Anyway assuming anyone is willing to work with me on this here is my take on the first verse in 1 Corinthians 14 (I'd like to memorize all of 1 Corinthians 14 to start).
The King James says...
A couple of words I would like to perhaps change.
Charity. Most modern versions say "love". That might be the word to use.
The other part of this verse which I am not sure of is the phrase "but rather".
The verse may be read..."Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts BUT RATHER...." which could be construed to mean that in place of love and spiritual gifts one should seek to prophecy.
Rather being something that implies something in place of what came before.
The New King James renders the verse as...
"But ESPECIALLY..." implies a continuation of what was before. Not a replacement like the word "RATHER" implies.
Anybody got any thoughts on this first verse? As to how best to translate it into modern English?
Carlos

The New King James renders the verse as...
Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.
"But ESPECIALLY..." implies a continuation of what was before. Not a replacement like the word "RATHER" implies.
