So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the LORD had said to Moses; and Joshua gave it as an inheritance to Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. Then the land rested from war. Joshua 11:23 NKJV
The toughest question asked about the book of Joshua is, “Did these events really take place?” Yes.
The second toughest question is, “Did God really order the obliteration of the people in all these cities and kingdoms?” Yes, again. It’s been six hundred years since a former idol worshipper from Ur believed the Lord, and He “credited it to him as righteousness” (Genesis 15:6 NIV). It’s been 430 years since the Lord announced the time and place of judgment for rejecting the Lord. Rahab is not given four hours or days to repentant or die. And her people, and neighboring cities and kingdoms, are not given four weeks or months. “The Lord is patient” is an understatement of immense proportions.
The third toughest question is, “How could an all-powerful and loving God wipe them all out?” Precisely because the Lord is all-powerful and loving…and much more. Even with the whole bible in hand, it is difficult to comprehend God’s infinite mercy, grace, and forgiveness. It’s rarer to grasp His eternal joy and peace. But that doesn’t change who God is!
Prayer: Lord, You want me to find real answers to the toughest questions in You and in Your Word. I do.
