In God [is] my salvation and my glory; The rock of my strength, [And] my refuge, [is] in God. Trust in Him at all times, you people; Pour out your heart before Him; God [is] a refuge for us. Selah Psalm 62:7-8 NKJV
Ask the average American male about the origin of the saying “God helps them who help themselves,” and there’s a decent chance he’ll answer, “The Bible!”
Wrong answer!
In scripture passage after scripture passage, God identifies Himself as a loving, gracious heavenly Father who wants to be our sole benefactor for everything we need. He wants us to come to Him with open, empty hands outstretched so that He can fill our hands—and our hearts—with everything He has for us.
God doesn’t call any of us to lives of independence or to a mind-set of rugged individualism. Instead, He wants us to be completely dependent upon Him for everything, starting with our salvation and moving all the way down the list of things He wants to do and provide for us.
Prayer: Gracious heavenly Father, may I never believe that You call me to a mind-set of self-sufficiency. Rather, remind me daily that You want me to be 100 percent dependent upon You for everything I need.
