Hebrews 10:19-25 BSB
“19Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, 20by the new and living way opened for us through the curtain of His body, 21and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.
“23Let us hold resolutely to the hope we profess, for He who promised is faithful. 24And let us consider how to spur one another on to love and good deeds. 25Let us not neglect meeting together, as some have made a habit, but let us encourage one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”
Old Covenant vs New Covenant
Under the Old Covenant God had with the Jews (biblical Israel of that time), the temple of God was a physical building, built by human hands. And there was a room inside the building called the “Holy of Holies.” The room was covered with a curtain and only the High Priest was permitted to enter, and only one day a year. And his purpose was to make atonement for his own sins and for the sins of the entire nation. Inside was the presence of God.
But, under the New Covenant, that all changed. For, in Jesus’ death on that cross, not only did he put our sins to death with him, but that curtain that stood between us and the “Holy of Holies” was torn in two so that now, by faith in Jesus Christ, we all might enter into God’s holy presence. Back then they went through human priests, but now we are a priesthood of believers in Christ and we need no human priests to mediate between us and God.
Our Only High Priest
And Jesus Christ is now our (and only) High Priest. And his sacrifice for our sins on that cross was the last physical sacrifice necessary to atone for our sins. For in his death he put our sins to death with him so that, by biblical faith in Jesus Christ, we might deny self, die to sin, and follow our Lord in obedience to his commands in holy living. And in his resurrection he rose from the grave victorious over sin, death, hell, and Satan, on our behalf.
Draw Near to God
Because of Jesus’ sacrifice for us on that cross, in putting our sins to death with him, and because he rose from the grace in victory over sin, on our behalf, then by faith in him we can now live in freedom from slavery (bondage) to sin, and we can, in the power of God, live holy lives, pleasing to God, in obedience to his commands, as a matter of life practice. We just have to resist temptation to sin and follow our Lord wherever he leads us.
And we must hold resolutely (decisively, definitely) to the hope we profess. But that hope must be biblically sound and supported. We cannot just claim who we are in Christ because we prayed a prayer to receive Christ and so we believe that we are now good to go to heaven regardless of how we live. We must deny self, die to sin daily, and follow our Lord in obedience to his commands, as a matter of life practice, in the power of God, by his grace.
[Matthew 5:13-16; Matthew 7:21-23; Matthew 28:18-20; Luke 9:23-26; John 4:31-38; John 10:27-30; John 13:13-17; John 14:12; Acts 1:8; Acts 26:18; Romans 6:1-23; Romans 8:1-14; Romans 10:14-15; Galatians 5:16-24; Ephesians 2:8-10; Ephesians 4:17-32; Ephesians 5:3-14; Titus 2:11-14; 1 Peter 2:9,21,24; 1 John 1:1-10; 1 John 2:1-6; 1 John 3:4-10]
Our Gatherings
And then, as believers in Christ, we are now part of Christ’s body, the body of Christ, the church (the only church). And now we are to be ministering to each other and encouraging and exhorting one another in our walks of faith in obedience to our Lord and no longer as slaves to sin. And to do this we need to be gathering together, either in person, or on the internet, or via a phone call or a text message or however it is possible for us to gather.
But in most gatherings of these institutional churches of today, partnered with the world and with the government, being marketed to the people of the world, there is no place for any of us to minister to one another like we are able to do here on the internet, or like some people are able to do in small home gatherings (house churches). We need to be ministering to one another and sharing with each other what God is teaching us each day.
And if we are not able to find other believers in Christ who are interested in gathering with us in person for the purpose that we might spur one another on to love and good deeds, and so we might speak to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, and so we might exhort one another daily so that not one of us will fall captive to the deceitfulness of sin or to false gospels taught, then right now (in the USA) the internet is still available.

Blessed are those whose sins are forgiven
By the blood of Jesus Christ.
Blessed is the one whose sin the Lord does
Not count against them; freedom found.
When, in silence, I did not confess
My sin to You; had no strength.
Then I owned up to my sin and
You forgave and cleansed me within.
Therefore let the godly pray to You;
Draw near to You; grace they’ll find.
They will not be o’ertaken by afflictions,
But in Christ peace abounds.
Lord, You are my hiding place.
I find my refuge in You secure.
You protect me from all evil.
You give songs of vict’ry in You.
Lord, You teach me to walk in Your ways;
Counsel me in love, I know.
Help me to not be stubborn and
Unwilling to follow in Your truth.
Thank You for Your love and mercy.
I put my trust in You always.
I rejoice in my Lord and
I sing of Him throughout all my days.
