When most of us think of Thanksgiving, we think of the four-day weekend. We think of family gatherings, long conversations catching up on family activities and a festive meal. But Thanksgiving is a lot more. It is a time set aside to give thanks to God. But so many folks ignore God in everyday life, it is only natural to ignore Him on Thanksgiving. After all, if we've made it big on the job or had a successful football season, isn't it because we've met the challenge? What about the food, clothing, housing and cars we have?
One man I talked with about these things reminded me that he earned all that he had. But the Bible tells us that we should give thanks to God for these benefits. Psalm 115:1 says, "Not to us, O Lord, not to us, But to Thy name give glory Because of Thy lovingkindness, because of Thy truth." This Psalm says that God is full of loving kindness and truth. If you just think about it for a moment, you realize that the degree of health you have comes from God. For example, if you have the strength to work and earn a fair wage, God has given it to you. It could be much different. God is a master craftsman. He made this universe in such a way that people like us could study it and stand in awe of its beauty and majesty.
Not only so, God has crafted a way of salvation. Human beings have a sin problem. But God crafted a remedy for this sin problem. His name is Jesus Christ. Those, who trust in Christ for the forgiveness of their sins, see the beauty of the Bible and the beauty of Christ's death on the cross. They see the beauty of God and the beauty of His universe. They sing these words, "Not to us, O Lord, not to us, But to Thy name give glory, Because of Thy loving kindness, because of Thy truth."
