Wine [is] a mocker, Strong drink [is] a brawler, And whoever is led astray by it is not wise. Proverbs 20:1 NKJV
In today’s world, when you receive an invitation to a celebration or party, it’s often safe to assume that the gathering includes alcohol. While there is plenty of debate within the Christian world about whether believers should drink at all, the Bible is abundantly clear in its warnings against the overconsumption of wine and strong drink.
The apostle Paul warns, “Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit” (Ephesians 5:18 NIV). This is a scriptural prohibition that’s accompanied by the reason for it. Then again, you probably know real-life examples of the words “which leads to debauchery,” whether among friends or family members, or from your own past experiences.
It’s no secret: over consumption of alcohol leads to ruined lives, ruined families, ruined reputations, and ruined testimonies of the work of Jesus Christ in your life. Christians should seek out God’s wisdom when it comes to drinking. Make sure alcohol never comes between you and the Lord. Never allow your testimony to be ruined by it.
Prayer: Lord, I have seen plenty of examples of alcohol ruining lives and families. Give me the wisdom and strength to never let alcohol affect me or my family in a way that dishonors You.
