Be angry and do not sin; on your bed, reflect in your heart and be still. Selah Psalm 4:4 HCSB
Some of your best and worst thinking will happen just before you go to bed. You can entertain thoughts that put you in a dark place and leave you there most of the night. But you could also spend time connecting who you are with the God of the good thought.
Negative emotions like anger, anxiety, hatred, and fear can leave your body sleepless as your mind considers things that aren’t true as well as unkind thoughts about people.
Sin throws a party when it takes what God said to avoid and uses it to corrupt your thoughts. It’s like poison to your heart and soul. These thoughts can get to the place where they simply won’t listen to reason, let alone submit to a God who is both orderly and wise. This thinking puts you at odds with God and then refuses His advice. It can actually make you sick.
Stop. Think. Pray. Be still and realize that the thoughts you avoid may lead you to thoughts that bring you closer to the awe-inspiring God.
Prayer: Lord, I can begin—and end—my day thinking about You, or I could go to sleep mad, wake up mad, and then stay that way most of the day. I don’t need coffee as much as I need Your influence in my life. Help me get quiet and then think about You.
