I just Googled 'low fodmap diets -- people with IBS do better on that diet.
One of my nieces was found to have a digestive problem that required gluten-free diet when she was little. Lots of people are sensitive to gluten -- ingredients in food has to be checked carefully. Same kind of thing with diabetics / diet , blood- sugar levels. And a person's insides Will feel better when the gluten is taken away.
As we get older, we find that things we Used to like don't like us any longer. Or just less of those foods.
It is more common than people realise Sue.
As for Gluten, this was found in the 1970, 1975 I think, it can easily be checked by a blood test, then the diet is adjusted to eat gluten free foods and foods without gluten free additives.
Within the last 10 years+ , Monash University in Australia found that fodmaps are an issue for many, they were first and are the world leaders. Most foods have a level of Fodmaps in them and vary considerably. I started on the elimination period 3 years ago, supposed to be a few weeks to find out what caused the issues, I am still on it and suffer greatly, I have had cameras every where possible, Fodmaps is definitely an issue but they do not know what else is causing problems. I struggle with it daily, severe at times, I feel my body is going to explode, then naturally it affects motions and become unstable and unpredictable.
Some of the main items that cause issues are onions, garlic, pear and apricot juices, if you read the small print on the labels of foods they are used as additives to flavour and sweeten. But there are lots, lots more, and supermarkets are not making it easy. Free from and other brands lead people to think woods are 'Free From' but they are free from this or that but rarely all problem items that can cause issues for people experiencing such problems.
Many say eat fruit it is good for you, I even got a juicer, healthy food. Monash have found having multiple fruits that seem ok, together they become high in fodmaps, over the recommended level, so following their guidance in the early stages I had raspberries, blueberrys and a banana, the recommended amount of each was 4 raspberries, 10 blueberries and a banana, the quantities were so low, especially raspberries it wasn't worth bothering. But they also confirmed to me that fruit must be eaten one at a time and with 3-4 hour gap between each!
It is a nightmare, I can have a cup of red grapes but cannot have green ones. Two weeks ago, not thinking I had a couple of glasses of white wine, my insides were screwed up. Every food has to me according to there recommendations for low-fodmaps, and every label is checked so that there are no additives that can cause issues.
One food that can cause issue eaten in error can make things worse and the issues peak for about 3 days. It takes 2-3 days for food to go through a normal body. Does than mean I have not got a normal body? Don't go down that road. LOL
I believe a lot of issues today are because of the food we eat, processed food, fast food, modified food, etc. I read some where part of the diet for cattle is made from bones of dead cattle, ground down, to me these things seem to be asking for trouble, but scientists say, the level allowed is safe we have done tests! It carries on until an issue raises a number of years down the line.
Sorry if I have gone on a little, I just thought it would give insight to someone who may be doesn't know about fodmaps and low fodmap diets. Monash University have an excellent App, it is very cheap, for anyone with issues it is worth having, it is an eye opener. Many are benefiting from a low-fodmap diet, sadly for me there are other issues inside, it is not just fodmaps.
