The worst verse in the Bible

The ship of fools website has conducted a reader poll on the worst verse in the Bible.

The top five turn out to be, in reverse order

"So the man took his concubine and sent her outside to them, and they raped her and abused her throughout the night, and at dawn they let her go."
Judges 19:25)

"Happy shall they be who take your little ones and dash them against the rock!"
(Psalm 137:9)

"Do not allow a sorceress to live."
(Exodus 22:18)

"This is what the Lord Almighty says... 'Now go and strike Amalek and devote to destruction all that they have. Do not spare them, but kill both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.'"
(1 Samuel 15:3)

"I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent."
(1 Timothy 2:12)

I know that plenty of us find this in bad taste at best, blasphemous at worst, so please don't assume I am in favour of this kind of poll.

I've put it up here because it raises some difficult issues about parts of the Bible that we find difficult, or even would rather were not there.

I actually think the worse (if worse means an awful truth) verse in the Bible is this...

Gen 6:5 The LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the LORD was sorry that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart. So the LORD said, "I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them."

On the other hand, heres one for the Ship of Fools, and one far more merciful than our evil hearts ever deserved....

Isa 53:4 Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned--every one--to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

I give the Ship of Fools one thing, they have rightly named themselves- they rail against the ONE who could save them, even as their ship is sinking...

Worse Verses?

One must understand why things were done that would look very awful to us.

God does nothing that is bad. It only seems that way because we cannot see beyond or why certain things were done.

One must study the reasons and not just assume they are the worse.

What could be worse than Jesus being scourged and whipped with the iron things on the end that ripped his flesh?

What could be worse than being nailed to a cross, your side pierced or have your legs broken if you are not dead before the time alloted on the cross?

What could be worse than Lucifer become Satan once he deceived Eve and condemned us to eternal death?

I could go on and on. The verses you cited are not the worse.

The people who raped her paid the price after. There was a reason why the *concubine* not his wife, was given to them, do you know why?

Why was it said that happy are the ones who take your little ones and dash them against the rock? Do You know?

Why wasn't a soceress to live? Do you know why?

Why did God give the order to destroy everything even the animals? Do you know why?

Why must a woman keep silent? Do you know why?

These are not the worse verses in the Bible, there are no worse verses in the Bible.

All is done for a reason, one mustn't just read and take at face value what is written, one must research to find out why?

Why would anyone wish certain verses not to be in the Bible?

Only someone who hasn't truly studied deeply the Bible would see these verses as the worse.

Before writing anything, you should first consult a minister to make you understand the reasons events happened and why they were written.

All things happen for a reason and not always for the worse.

God said that there would be the greatest tribulation the world has ever experienced in the End Times, which means the verses about the concubine given to the men is nothing compared to what will happen to millions of people who will be killed, raped, persecuted etc etc. Now that could be considered as one of the worse verses..but it isn't..because there is a good reason why this has to happen.

Trust me..these verses are not the worse as there are none in the Bible. Only to us with carnal minds would think that because we don't have the mind of God of why He lets things happen..but it's always for a good reason.

I am not sure that you can dismiss this easily. The verse revelling in the idea of Babylonian children being dashed to death is unacceptably brutal.

I am aware of the situation of the Psalmist, being held in exile, and can appreciate some of the hurt and bitterness that goes with it, but I would find it very difficult to accept the verse.

It seems to fly in the face of everything that the Bible has to say about forgiveness and love. "Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you and cheer on anyone who brutally murders their children." Did you see the bit that doesn't fit into the Sermon on the Mount?

The story of God commanding Abraham to sacrifice Isaac I find unimaginably cruel. I feel ill whenever I read it.

Many of us have favourite verses and passages in the Bible. It is natural that there is the reverse - least favourite parts.

I don't want to duck this issue, but don't really know how to go forwards with it. Any help?

It's because you don't understand the reasons god does

Did God let Abraham sacrifice Isaac? No. God wanted to see if Abraham had complete trust in Him. The sacrifice which didn't happen symbolized what God would do to save the world..have His only begotten Son sacrificed to save humanity from eternal death sentence that Satan bestowed on all of humanity once he deceived Eve to disobey God. Abraham trusted God to the point of giving his son as a sacrifice but God didn't let him do it..so I don't see why you get sick over it. Get sick more over the Pagans who sacrificed to Pagan gods.

Forgiving your enemy isn't the same as we are not allowed to kill anyone..only God has the right as He is the Creator and He kills whoever goes against Him..Satan, his demons and all those who after the 1000 years will rise against Christ. If you keep one bad apple in the basket, it will eventually rot all the others, therefore you have to get rid of the bad apple.

No where it is written to cheer on killing of children, what it means that if the parents who raise those children are not with God, nieither will those children either, therefore, God will destroy them as all was destroyed from parents, chidlren, animals when God sent to destroy the pagan cities. The parents are responsible for their children. When the time comes, if we are not with God, we will be destroyed along with our children as it is our responsiblity and not anyone elses.

You must read carefully, the babylonian children were not dashed against the rocks. You must read all about why this was said. Again if it would have happened..they are pagan children and God keeps nothing that is pagan even the animals.

You must truly put yourself in the context of what is written and why.

Now just to give you an example.. Mafia families : their kids grow up to be mafiosos and end up in jail and many times the death sentence.

Pagans children become like them, therefore like the Mafiosos they are condemned to death by God because they are against Him as the Mafioso children are against justice.

Hope this helps..

"Happy shall they be who take your little ones and dash them against the rock!"
(Psalm 137:9)

Hi Dancingfeather. Thanks for the reply. But I am not convinced by your interpretation of this verse. The meaning, I think, is clear and it is celebrating the thought of Babylonian children being killed.

I am sure that there is a certain amount of poetic license here. Perhaps the Psalmist is using this very extreme image to try to express the depths of his grief at being exiled in Babylon. All the same...

And the story of Abraham and Isaac troubles me because it seems such a cruel test - for both Abraham and Isaac. I wonder what they talked about as they made the journey back from Moriah. I have grown up secure in the knowledge that my father would never do anything to harm me. Isaac grows up knowing that his father would be prepared to kill him.

If this story is only an illustration of putting faith in God, then that is easy enough to accept. Thinking about it as a family story raises all sorts of difficulties.

I love the word of God, and I treasure it; passages like these I find very hard to reconcile with my faith.

:lightbulbYES.. only poetic license

:lightbulbYES, ONLY A ILLUSTRATION AS TO TRUST GOD no matter what He asks.

I love the word of God, and I treasure it; passages like these I find very hard to reconcile with my faith.

:love:If you love the Word of God and treasure it..then TRUST Him that whatever He does is for the Good ..never Evil..even if people are killed, even if children are killed..it's not being cruel. God doesn't kill unless there is a good reason as He loves us all but He can't keep loving those who rebel and even their children would rebel against God if He let them live. You see you are responsible for your children and they will be what you teach them. It would be a continous battle as the children would grow up and hate God for haviing killed their parents even if God was right.

How you going to feel when at the End..all those who will rise against Jesus at the last battle will be thrown in the lake of fire..their children included? Now, do you understand that God cannot keep the children who are raised to hate God and probably will be adoring a false god. It is not mine or your responsibilty to teach those kids and they will hate God anyway. So He can't keep anything or anyone. Nothing that smells like Satan will be kept.

Many people are shocked by what is written in the Bible! And it is for God to sort it out for them! Every person that has a question about a verse has to ask the Author what it means! And He will give all the answers! There are actually "worse" verses in the Word, even claiming God repented! but it is for God to reveal it to the ones it was meant to be revealed too!
The Word of God is His to reveal to He pleases! And it contains two messages...one very good, and one very bad! depends on the heart that reads it, on what it would mean too for that particular heart!

Yes, but it is always good to talk to your minister as it is written that if we don't understand something to go and ask. God did REGRET not repent for having destroyed everyone with the flood and he made the rainbow to remind Him not to do that again.

One must weed the Garden.

None of the messages are bad..it's just as when our parents would tell us..you listen you get..if you don't you will be punished.

Many think how horrible God had so many people killed but they didn't deserve to live as they were doing dispicable acts and didn't care about God and were not good.

As weeds in a garden, you have no choice but to kill the weeds if you want a good garden

Listen to me ? GOD is LOVE , Everything HE ever did was out of LOVE!
We Must always start with the thought HE is LOVE !Love gives mercy where it can! He did what He had to do for LOVES SAKE!

He loves mankind! HE has proved it with His very life!
He has suffered since before HE made this world! seeing it and the evil on this planet! Yet HE has allowed it to go on ! To gain a family , He can share His kingdom with!
WE must be Very careful how we MIGHT judge our CREATOR! GOD is GOOD !
HIS wrath is coming upon this planet once more and very soon i believe!
But HE has been long suffering with mankind watching the evil on this planet! HE has all the rights we only have the rights HE allows

I Believe He Believes God is Love..it's only...

We all believe that God is Love, no one is judging God, just finding hard some things that are done as the human mind cannot be God's. It takes time to grasp..what God means at times.

Let me post the text and dancing feather can ask her minister to explain this to her. Exodus 32:14 ..
14And the LORD repented of the evil which he thought to do unto his people.
Read about the whole surcumstances around this matter, and you tell me if God needs Moses to change His mind for Him! And after we thouroughly discussed this one single verse, using Jesus' input in the matter, then we can discuss the next one. On who actually said Israel should go to war! I would love to share with you the revelations I recieved, but we have to do it in the Love of Jesus! Ok! If i find any hostility, i will withdraw! If we put Jesus in a bad light, i withdraw! Let us do this with an open heart, and remember... Jesus came to Show us what the Farther looks like! What Jesus did and say, is EXACTLY what God is like! remember this as well.... God cannot change! Jesus is the personification of God! He is God! John 1 and Joh 10 confirms that what Jesus said is true.... I and my Father are one!
They have the same character, and the same manner and the same will! What God does, Jesus do! What Jesus says, God would say! So there are NO differance between the God Son, and God Father! Remember this!

God felt *regret*..he did not repent..

Let me post the text and dancing feather can ask her minister to explain this to her. Exodus 32:14 ..

AND THE LORD BEGAN TO FEEL REGRET OVER THE EVIL THAT HE HAD SPOKEN OF *DOING* TO HIS PEOPLE.

wHEN ABRAHAM SPOKE TO GOD..HE PROCEEDED TO SOFTEN HIS FACE..VERSE 11. YOU HAVE TO READ THE WHOLE CONTEXT OF WHY GOD DOES THINGS ..NOT JUST BITS AND PIECES.
14And the LORD repented of the evil which he thought to do unto his people.
Read about the whole surcumstances around this matter, and you tell me if God needs Moses to change His mind for Him!

GOD DOESN'T NEED ANYONE TO CHANGE HIS MIND BUT IT LIKE YOU OR ME, SOMEONE CAN TALK TO US AND GIVE US A GOOD REASON TO CHANGE OUR MINDS. NO ONE CAN DO IT..WE HAVE TO *DECIDE* TO DO IT.

Read the whole context

You should read why God was so blazed with angry with His people He had taken out of Egypt and why He wanted to destroy them. After saving them they returned to being stiff-necked, made an idol, making burnt offerings to the idol and making communion sacrifices.

NO WONDER HE WANTED TO DESTROY THEM..

Abraham spoke to God and softened His face towards what God *wanted* to do.

Then God regretted not repented..what evil He wanted to do against His people who were sacreficing to another god, the gold calf. His people should be happy that Abraham was able to soften God from destroying them.

One must never take just a sentence to say things..one must read the whole story before saying God is this or that or did this or that without giving the REASON why.

God does nothing without good reason and He has every right to destroy who He created.

Won't you go to jail if you steal? Or murder? etc?..

I don't need to go see my minister about that..I know how God thinks and He does nothing without a reason and our minds cannot fathom always why He does things because we are imperfect. Just like sometimes I didn't understand my mother why she punished me for something I thought wasn't wrong..until she explained to me why. My young mind wasn't yet formed enough but my mother's was.

"Happy shall they be who take your little ones and dash them against the rock!" (Psalm 137:9)

Firstly, I doubt that this would make a bed-time story, or a family story. I doubt it was written with such intention. Everything God has written has been written for our benefit...to teach and to cause us to stay close to Him. Every verse in the bible has spiritual meaning.

DancingFeather is indeed correct. Children are often involved in the consequences of their parents' sin. What they do affects others, either for good or for evil. Sin, unfortunately engulfs others in its retribution. Exodus 20:5 Exodus 34:7 Numbers 14:18 Deuteronomy 5:9

Psalm 137:9 is a confirmation of what God foretold in Isaiah 13:16. But the spiritual application indicates that we must deal radically with the "little sins" in our lives. They must be destroyed or they will destroy us.

C.S. Lewis wrote:

I know things in the inner world which are like babies; the infantile beginnings of small indulgences, small resentments, which one day may become dipsomania, or settled hatred, but which woo us and wheedle us with special pleadings, and seem so tiny, so helpless that in resisting them, we feel we are being cruel to animals. They begin whimpering to us "I don't ask much, but" or "I had at least hoped", or "you owe yourself some consideration".

Against all of such pretty infants (the dear ones have such winning ways) the advice of the Psalm is the best. Knock the little brats' brains out. And "blessed" he who can, for it's easier said than done.

What C S Lewis says is a valuable spiritual lesson - we should deal with sin before it can grow and get a hold of us - but "little sins" is not what this Psalm is about.

Likewise the observation about sins being passed from generation to generation.

I have been thinking about this verse for a while now. The only comfort or redeeming thought I can draw from it is that in prayer we can offer all our thoughts and feelings to God, no matter how despicable they might be. There is no bar to being utterly honest because he know us inside out. God wants a relationship with us as we are, so we don't need to pretend that we are more holy than we are, nor do we have to present only our best side to God.

Only took one sin to destroy this entire Planet and every creature on it and the Planet its self!
GOD hates Sin !Sin is rebellion to GOD!
He cannot have rebellion in HIS KINGDOM!
So we need to make a Effort to reject sin and if we do ? WE MUST repent Quickly !But sometimes we sin in our minds and do not know it?
The WAges of sin is SURE! Death , it might start off as a sickness and grow to bring death! Still Our LORD has provided Everything for us , if we are Willing to obey His living Words?

Jas 5:14 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:
Jas 5:15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.

Not all sickness is from Sin!

We read in Ex 34:7 that four generations would pay for the sins of a great great great grandfather! Where is the fairness in that? Sorry, why should I pay for my father's sin? and why should my son pay for my sin. This God, I will not serve but this One..... Ezekiel 18:20 ..Each sould shall do report for his OWN sin!!! Aha..This is a fair God! And if I say it is the same God, he appears to be scisophrenic. And we know He is not!

There is many things in the Bible that a person has to take to God for revelation, and no other person can explain, or reveal it for you, it is the sole priviledge of Jesus to reveal the Word of God to whom He wants! And as i experience it in my own life, the more I believe the Word He does reveal to me, and live out that part of the Word, the more He trusts to reveal to me!

Let me explain one little part of the Word that He showed me, and how rock-solid i believe this short sentence! And allow me to explain also what that faith in that Word brought on my life!

I prayed for sick people, and they got well. Please allow me a single detail of the most amazing miricle that happened when I prayed for an old lady that had big kidney-stones.

I served in the church council as a deacon. I was a very popular member in the church as I worked very hard and did a lot of things in the church. On a certain Thursday evening in a council meeting there was great strife in the meeting. I had forgiveness in my heart for one of the church members, and the rest of the council was non-forgiving. I cried so heartbroken that they had to stop the meeting and break for tea. The council was made up by about 90 people.

I knew i was in the will of God to let this brother off without punishment, but the rest of the council was adament! It tore my heart in two. I asked God to show me the heart of these people, and when I looked into the eyes of another person I saw a black, wet and hard rock. That is when I burst out crying.

Later that night, when the council ended the meeting, I knew my days with this church was numbered. Our churchwarden walked up to me and told me that his wife had to go for a nephrotomy the next morning to remove the stones of her kidney. I asked him to join me in one of the side-rooms of the hall where we had the meeting and we prayed for his wife. She was in bed opposite the street from the church.

That Sunday in the morning service the churchwarden walked up to the minister and asked for the microphone. He said...."Thursday night after the council meeting Cobus and myself prayed for my wife, and after I locked up the church I went home. As i enterd our bedroom I saw my wife with a little bottle in her hands. She was smiling and I could see she had no more pain. She lifted the bottle and showed me the stones. They were huge, and she said a few minutes ago she woke up and felt something inside her night-gown. She felt the great relief that there was also no pain. She switched the bedside lamp on and saw the stones drop on the carpet when she stood up. Her nightgown was dry and she could not understand what happened. I told her we prayed for her and at that moment the stones came out."

I felt so blessed, and I thought it must have been a reward for my obedience to fight the council. Then my rude awakening!

Not long after that meeting we showed the Jesus film in the biggest squatter camp in South Africa. It is a good evangelistic move to show the film in their mother tongue. That night after the film a mother brought her two yearold son for healing. He had one misformed hip bone. In Stead of a sock and a joint, his right hip had two flat sections grinding against each other. The boy was in much pain.

My heart ached for this young person and the mother said she took him to many churches, so I took the boy and prayed for him. He did not get healed. I asked the mother whether she reads her Bible, and she said no! I told her that it she should and then the boy would get healed! I was wrong!!! That is a lie!!! The moment she walked away, I knew something was terribly wrong! I needed to get home so I can confront God! I wanted to be alone so I can talk to God and ask Him what His problem was!

So we packed up and i dropped everyone off, went home and sat at the table with my Bible! I prayed and asked the Lord..."Tonight I need to know if you exist, and whether i am your child or not! Talk to me Lord."

I opened my bible and read 1 John 3:9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
I said .."No God this Bible is lieing to me, I will always be a sinner. That is why Jesus died for me!" But a gain I knew this is a lie, I will not be a sinner for ever! Then I asked..."Lord i healed many sick, why not tonight, if there is one person that needed healing it was this boy!

God answerred... Matthew 7:21 to 23 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
Immedieately I recognised myself. I did not fit in the first scripture of 1 Joh 3 but very defenately in the second scripture of Matthew 7. I was knocked cold!!! I said out loud..."Lord what should I do?"

He said just as loud: "Genesis 1 verse 1 Start!!!!" And four months later I did! In that four months I already looked at the world differently! That four months made the most unpopular man in our city! Nobody, not a single person believed that a person cannot live without sin! Today it is still the most successful lie that the whole world believes!

Nobody is perfect! The biggest lie! And I saw in Genesis the first words God spoke to man after they left the Garden, that God intends for man to rule over sin. I was shocked to the core! God wants us to be perfect as He is perfect, even in Genesis.

Then I read and studied the whole bible, and for thirteen years I went into isolation, just me and God and His Word! Three of us, and the most wonderful journey of my life started. I now know God, and his will! and I obey Him only! That is why I am typing here now, because I want the people to know, that God has a level of righteousness and man has one as well. And only one level would get you into God's Kingdom.

I do not want to be recogniseable in this scripture.... Romans 10:3 For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.
Let me show you the righteousness these people set up.... "We will allways be sinners, but it is ok, Jesus died for our sins!"

That is half of the truth, that makes it unknowledgeable! He also rose, so that we can have a new life WITHOUT SIN!

Thank you for giving me the time to share with you!

Let me show you the perfect people of God, and let us become saints first, then allow His teachers to also perfect (complete) us!

Ephe 4: 11 to 13 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 12For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: 13Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

I really mean this! May God's will be done in my life!

You do NOT understand salvation!
All GODS children ARE perfect once Born -Again ! Our spirit man is made like our LORD JESUS!

The sleah part is a sionner and dies because of it!
I also think ,Not sure ? But our moms and dads have the spiritual power over there children until the reach the age pf accountability!Maybe as long as they are in there household?
Not sure about that?

Eze 11:19 And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them an heart of flesh:

Eze 36:26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.

Joh 3:5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

Joh 3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

I DO not judge any works of MY GOD and CREATOR ,except by the standard of LOVE!
Knowing everything HE ever did was OUT OF LOVE , which gives mercy! I refuse to see HIM any other way!

Php 3:15 Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you

Heb 11:40 God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.

Heb 10:14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them

Rom 5:19 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.

Heb 12:23 To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,

Gal 4:19 My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you

Jas 1:18 Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.
Rom 8:29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.

1Co 2:16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.
2Pe 1:4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
Mat 10:25 It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his lord.

1Co 15:48 As is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy: and as is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly.
Rom 9:8 That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God
