The Word Of God
Have you ever held a real sword in your hands? It kinda makes you feel strong and powerful. Although a good sword is a thing of beauty, its real use is only discovered in battle. A warrior without a sword is like a golfer without his clubs. In the days of knights and swords, no true soldier ever went into battle without his trusty sword strapped to his side. It is both an offensive and a defensive weapon, and it is compared to God's Word in Ephesians chapter 6. Do you ever read your Bible? And if so, do you spend any time thinking about what you've read and seek revelation concerning its application to your life?
Then, when God's Spirit so graciously illuminates its meaning, do you then commit that Scripture to memory? Now c'mon, before you get offended and quit reading, give me a few more minutes of your time...
In Matthew chapter 4 we read about the 3 temptations of Christ. He is being tested by the devil himself just before His public ministry is to begin. Three times satan attempts to get Jesus to compromise with him. And three times Jesus uses His Sword to defend Himself against these attacks. That's right, Jesus, the Son of God, quoted Scripture to fight the devil, and He won! Not only did Jesus use God's Word to defend Himself, but He also used it to mount a counterattack on His enemy. As the written Word of God was illuminated by God's Holy Spirit, Jesus then parried the enemy's temptations with the spoken Word of God.
That is how the Word of God becomes alive and active, penetrating to the very thoughts and intentions of the heart. But, for all it's worth, God's Spirit can only bring to light (remembrance) Truth we have already discovered. We must know His Word. As a soldier of the cross, we must become well equipped at handling the Sword of His Word. God be with you all...
