Take the initiative (1)
'Look at an ant.' PROVERBS 6:6
Sometimes we can spend too much time twiddling our thumbs waiting for the nod from God to go to China or Africa. Listen: being a missionary is not a career choice, we're called to be alert to God's work wherever we've been placed at any particular time. There really is no time or place like the present for knuckling down and doing the things that pleases God. John Lennon once sang, 'Life is what happens whilst you're busy making other plans'. I wonder how many opportunities from God you've missed in the moment because you've been busy making other plans. Don't waste a lifetime waiting for your big break; be alert to today and take the initiative.
Solomon writes: 'Look at an ant...Nobody has to tell it what to do. All summer it stores up food...So how long are you going to laze around doing nothing? How long before you get out of bed? A nap here, a nap there, a day off here, a day off there, sit back, take it easy - do you know what comes next?...a dirt-poor life, poverty your permanent houseguest' (Proverbs 6:6-11 TM). He meant: whatever we do (or neglect to do) catches up with us. God has a brilliant future mapped out for you, but you don't live in the future, you live in the now. So how about making a difference now? Go on; take the initiative.
