'AS GOLIATH MOVED...TO ATTACK, DAVID QUICKLY RAN...TO MEET HIM.' SAMUEL 17:48
The Bible says, 'For forty days, twice a day' (1 Samuel 17:16 NLT) the massive warrior Goliath publicly dissed the people of Israel. His aim was to make them feel scared and ashamed. Today your giant may not be wearing body-armour and waving a massive sword but you can bet that he'll use those same tactics of intimidation and humiliation.
Many years before David and Goliath met on the battlefield Goliath's big family had been Israel's arch enemies. Armies led by Israel's great commander Joshua had blitzed them all; except those who lived in the city of Gath, where Goliath came from. Why is that detail important? Because if you leave your old enemy a leg to stand on he'll rise to fight again. Maybe you're dealing with issues your parents and grandparents never dealt with; things like addiction, divorce, anger and depression.
When the Israelites 'heard the Philistine's challenge, they were terrified and lost all hope' (1 Samuel 17:11 TM). If that's how you feel, do what David did, 'As Goliath moved closer to attack, David...ran out to meet him.'
Writer Max Lucado picks up this point and encourages us to apply it to our own lives: 'Rush your giant with a God-saturated soul!' Are you up for some of that? David had a clever sling that allowed him to throw stones and the Bible says God has equipped you too, 'with weapons of righteousness in the right hand and in the left' (2 Corinthians 6:7 NIV). You have the power to fight your giant and win!
