Excellent leadership (2)

'I'M WITH YOU ALL THE WAY.' 2 CORINTHIANS 7:4

For leadership at its finest, check out the Apostle Paul. He told the young, often-troubled Christians at Corinth: 'I'm with you all the way, no matter what. I have...the greatest confidence in you. If only you knew how proud I am of you...despite all our troubles.' In spite of their immaturity, and 'fights in the church' (2 Corinthians 7:5 TM), Paul was their biggest cheerleader. He knew how to comfort and correct, how to encourage and discipline - signs of excellent leadership.

So, how do you become excellent leader: ?

a) show consistency; - everyone knows that whatever their own position or role they will be valued equally and treated fairly;

b) constantly express appreciation, realising people need reminding again and again that they're an important part of the team;

c) recognise the wisdom of listening to anyone's suggestions, opinions and ideas without being dismissive because when lots of different points of view on an issue have been gathered any future decisions will be much more likely to succeed

d) don't see people as statistics; businesswoman Mary Kay Ash who made her fortune by setting up the 'Mark Kay' cosmetics line said, 'P & L doesn't just mean "profit and loss" it means "people and love"'

e) explain why things need doing a certain way, because it lessens the agro that can stew in a team who feel 'ordered around.' Remember, Jesus was the ultimate leader and his approach was this: "You've observed how godless rulers throw their weight around, how quickly a little power goes to their heads. It's not going to be that way with you. Whoever wants to be great must become a servant." (Matthew 20:25-26 TM)
