Don't panic

'DO NOT BE AFRAID OF SUDDEN FEAR.' PROVERBS 3:25

There are times when life throws something at you that's really scary. For some people it's exams, for others it's spiders and for others it's public speaking. The fear-factor that comes with these things has physical effects: you can't breathe, your palms sweat, your chest gets tight, you feel weak... If you recognise these symptoms, you're not alone!

Every year almost one in three people have a panic attack. What's the answer? The Bible says: 'Do not...panic...The Lord shall be your confidence' (Pr 3:25 AMP). Here are some tips you can use to help:

1) Breathe: Panic makes you breathe in short, shallow bursts but breathing deeply helps to calm and relax you. Remember, 'He himself gives all men life and breath' (Acts 17:25 NIV). So when you start to feel overwhelmed just breathe the Name of Jesus.

2) Don't panic about feeling panicked! If you do, you'll end up in double-trouble. An old American president once said, 'We have nothing to fear but fear itself.' It's one thing to realise that you're scared but don't add that to your list of worries. It's possible to allow yourself to feel fear without reacting to it and it will help to break the cycle too.

3) Distract yourself: Panic makes you think thoughts that feed your fear so you need to get your mind onto something completely different. Whisper a prayer, quote a verse, listen to some music or talk to a friend. If your panic continues to be an ongoing issue there's no shame in getting professional help. After all, it's God who gives doctors the wisdom to help. So take action today and don't let panic control you!
