Cut yourself some slack!
'NOT THAT I HAVE ALREADY OBTAINED THIS OR HAVE ALREADY REACHED THE GOAL... BUT I PRESS ON... FORGETTING WHAT LIES BEHIND AND STRAINING FORWARD TO WHAT LIES AHEAD,' PHILIPPIANS 3:12-14
James says, 'We all make many mistakes' (James 3:2 NCV). Some of the mistakes we make are very public and get us into a lot of trouble (remember Jade Goody on Celebrity Big Brother earlier this year)! Some of our mistakes are private and just leave us with an inner sense of disappointment at having let ourselves down again.
When you know you've failed, and when you're big enough to take it on the chin and not go blaming someone else for your mistake, you need to learn to forgive yourself. It's quite likely that you did the wrong thing - but you had the right motive. Here's how the process works: when you've admitted your mistake and learned your lesson you need to put it behind you and move on.
Don't allow yourself to be chained to a past disaster. The Apostle Paul said, 'Not that I have already obtained this or have already reached the goal... but I press on... forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead,' (Philippians 3:12-14 NRS). What are you looking forward to? Do you spend as much time looking forward as you do looking back? Your future doesn't have to be absolutely perfect to be exciting and worthwhile.
Writer and radio guy Chuck Swindoll writes: 'Show me the guy who wrote the rules for perfectionism, and I'll guarantee he's a nail biter with a face full of tics...whose wife dreads to see him come home.' God said, 'I...am he who blots away your sins...and will never think of them again' (Isaiah 43:25 TLB). Now, if God is ready to erase your mistakes, isn't it time you stopped beating yourself up, received His grace and moved on?
