The War in Ukraine and Bible Prophecy

Hello there,

Visiting another forum I found an interesting study entered by a lady from Australia relating to the war taking place in Ukraine and Biblical prophecy, she started with the origin of the people of Russia revealed in Genesis 10 in the generations of the sons of Noah:- Shem, Ham and Japheth. Though these things will be known by many here on the forum, I think at this present time it is worth considering these things again, and I would value any input, but please keep it as simple and concise as possible, for otherwise it can be difficult to follow.

'The sons of Japheth; -
Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and
Javan, and Tubal, and Meshech, and Tiras.'
And the sons of Gomer; Ashkenaz, and Riphath, and Togarmah.
And the sons of Javan; Elishah, and Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim.
By these were the isles of the Gentiles divided in their lands;
every one after his tongue, after their families, in their nations.'
(Gen 10:5)

* Magog is the land and people from the descendants of Japheth's son. They eventually settled in the 'far north' in the coastlands. (Ezekiel 38:6):-
'Gomer, and all his bands; the house of Togarmah of the north quarters, and all his bands: and many people with thee.'

* Meshech and Tubal are also mentioned and were other sons that settled as families and tribes in the northern quarter of the earth,

In Ezekiel 37:12 it says:
'Therefore prophesy and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, O My people,
I will open your graves, and cause you to come up out of your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel.'

* Russia's invasion of the Ukraine is creating a mass exodus of peoples, among them Jews fleeing to Israel. God is bringing His People home. If this invasion of Ukraine by Russia is indeed the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy, then, as it starts to consolidate on the Ukraine it will cast it's eye south and eventually come down to the mountains of Israel to gain economic wealth. God's word gives great detail of how that will happen and what He will do.

' But thou, O LORD, shalt endure for ever; and Thy remembrance unto all generations.
Thou shalt arise, and have mercy upon Zion: for the time to favour her, yea, the set time, is come.
For Thy servants take pleasure in her stones, and favour the dust thereof.
So the heathen shall fear the name of the LORD, and all the kings of the earth Thy glory.'
(Psa 102:12-15)

* During these difficult days, we have wars and rumours of wars in various places, and now Russia has invaded the Ukraine.
What does Scripture have to tell us about the Russian Federation army coming against Israel in the latter days?

The first thing I would note is that Ezekiel 37 is about the resurrection of God’s people at the last day, as Jesus said. Notice below…..

Ezekiel 37:1-14

King James Version

37 The hand of the Lord was upon me, and carried me out in the spirit of the Lord, and set me down in the midst of the valley which was full of bones,
2 And caused me to pass by them round about: and, behold, there were very many in the open valley; and, lo, they were very dry.
3 And he said unto me, Son of man, can these bones live? And I answered, O Lord God, thou knowest.
4 Again he said unto me, Prophesy upon these bones, and say unto them, O ye dry bones, hear the word of the Lord.
5 Thus saith the Lord God unto these bones; Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you, and ye shall live:
6 And I will lay sinews upon you, and will bring up flesh upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and ye shall live; and ye shall know that I am the Lord.

8 And when I beheld, lo, the sinews and the flesh came up upon them, and the skin covered them above: but there was no breath in them.

12 Therefore prophesy and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, O my people, I will open your graves, and cause you to come up out of your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel.
13 And ye shall know that I am the Lord, when I have opened your graves, O my people, and brought you up out of your graves,
14 And shall put my spirit in you, and ye shall live, and I shall place you in your own land: then shall ye know that I the Lord have spoken it, and performed it, saith the Lord.”

So after the resurrection of the dead in Christ, after the judgment, and after the marriage supper, God’s people (Zion) shall return and shall reign on earth with Christ for a thousand years.

Then we go to Ezekiel 38 concerning the battle of Gog and Magog

Ezekiel 38 is during and at the end of the thousand year reign of Christ. Notice below Israel ( Gods people) are dwelling safely. And more importantly notice Israel has no “walls” like modern day Israel has.

2 Son of man, set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him,

4 And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws, and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords:

6 Gomer, and all his bands; the house of Togarmah of the north quarters, and all his bands: and many people with thee.

21 And I will call for a sword against him throughout all my mountains, saith the Lord God: every man's sword shall be against his brother.
22 And I will plead against him with pestilence and with blood; and I will rain upon him, and upon his bands, and upon the many people that are with him, an overflowing rain, and great hailstones, fire, and brimstone.”

This is the battle of Gog and Magog mentioned in Revelation 20

5 But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.
6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.

So this battle happens after the first resurrection, at the end of the thousand year reign of Christ, not before.

Here is the battle that happens before the resurrection, where God gathers the nations of the world against Israel/ Jerusalem….

And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon.

Hello again,

Ezekiel was a prophet to the exiles of Israel in Babylon. God gave him words to encourage the people that there would come a time of national restoration. Yes, following 70 yrs of exile they would return to the land of Israel.

Then Ezekiel received another prophecy from God concerning a further exile that would take place, which found it's fulfilment in AD70, when the Romans burned Jerusalem, the Jews scattering throughout the world: but yet again God assures them that He would return them to the land. Today we are witnessing this last national restoration of the Jews. It started in the 1900's till Israel became a nation in 1948. There are still Jews scattered throughout the world, but over time they have been returning, often because of conflict, to Israel. today we are witnessing yet more being forced through circumstances to return to the land.

* In Ezekiel 38 the vision given to Ezekiel describes a great army which will come against Israel:-

'And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws,
and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen,
all of them clothed with all sorts of armour,
even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords:
Persia, Ethiopia, and Libya with them; all of them with shield and helmet:

* Here the Hebrew words translated Horses, shields, bucklers and swords, have other underlying meanings:-

Horses (H5483 - sus sus) meaning 'moving rapidly'
Shields (H4043 - magen meginnah) meaning 'protector' or 'defence'.
Bucklers (H6793 - tsinnah ) meaning something piercing.
Swords (H2719 - chereb) meaning a cutting instrument.

" We see the Russian army in Ukraine moving rapidly in tanks, with protection, as they fire missiles and bullets, piercing and cutting down all in their path.

* It would seem that the reason for this war is economic, for Russia has only 7% of it's land that is arable, the rest consists of mountains, and they have winters so long that it cannot grow mass crops. The Ukraine is Russia's bread basket, and Russia cannot let them join NATO and be a potential adversary.

* Among the names in the genealogy of Japheth, Noah's son, is 'Meshech,' now Moscow, and 'Tubal' now Tobolsk (Genesis 10 - see OP).

* Russia and the former Soviet nations have a government system which is oppressive, controlling and intimidating etc., So God is against these nations of the far north and how they operate. They used to be called the Soviet Union until 1991 and then separated into Russia and the Union of Nations. The Ukraine being one of these.

* At God's appointed time He turns the Russian army around and leads them in another direction (Ezekiel 38:4-6). The 'hook' possibly being their desire for wealth in the form of oil and gas for example, or the attraction of the wall-less fertile region of the Golan Heights, near the Syrian border. It is the only place in Israel that does not have walls. Formerly barren land, Israel has turned it into a fertile region, with farms, livestock, vineyards, and fruit trees etc.,

'Thus saith the Lord GOD;
It shall also come to pass,
that at the same time shall things come into thy mind,
and thou shalt think an evil thought:
And thou shalt say,
I will go up to the land of unwalled villages;

Hello again,

In Ezekiel 38:8, God brings this Russian Federation and the other three nations of - former Persia (Iran), Libya and Ethiopia, a very great army, down to the land of Israel. At a time when Israel has been gathered from many countries of the world, and are living in peace and safety in their own land. (Ezekiel 38:9).

The countries who rise in opposition will be Sheba and Dedan (Ezekiel 38:13) which is Saudi Arabia. Also the British Commonwealth Countries, (the young lions) (Ezekiel 38:13). Only these countries will raise questions as to 'Why?' and 'What?' they are doing: no other nation is concerned. Why is this so? It is suggested by the lady whose study prompted this thread, that it is because the UN has never acknowledged Israel's right to the Golan Heights, so will not contest it. Interesting, yes? Well I found it so.

I enter this, because if it is so that this war waging in the Ukraine is just the beginning of what is prophesied in Ezekiel 38, then we must be watchful and prepared. This looks like being a long, drawn out conflict, but we need to be on our toes, and ready for all eventualities.

No problem. Many confuse the battle before the resurrection and thousand year reign of Christ with the battle after the resurrection as is shown in Ezekiel 38, or the battle of Gog and Magog as is also shown in Revelation 20.

If you read Revelation 19 you will see the first battle before the resurrection, and in Revelation 20 you will see the Ezekiel 38 battle of Gog and Magog after the resurrection.

Like I said above, Ezekiel 37 shows the resurrection of the saints. Ezekiel 38 shows the saints of God dwelling peacefully without walls during the thousand year reign. And at the end of that thousand years is when the Ezekiel 38 battle happens as shown in Revelation 20.

Revelation 19:17-21

And then the Ezekiel 38 battle or battle of Gog and Magog is shown after the resurrection and thousand years, shown here ….
