Jesus was aware that his disciples were complaining, so he said to them, "Does this offend you? Then what will you think if you see the Son of Man ascend to heaven again? The Spirit alone gives eternal life. Human effort accomplishes nothing. And the very words I have spoken to you are spirit and life. But some of you do not believe me." (For Jesus knew from the beginning which ones didn't believe, and he knew who would betray him.) John 6:61-64 NLT
Many people who haven’t carefully read John’s Gospel imagine that Jesus was a populist, attracting larger and larger crowds throughout His public ministry. What a false impression!
If you want to see this for yourself, invite a friend, colleague, or neighbor to read John’s Gospel with you. Don’t tell them what it says or means. Instead, ask them questions about what they think it says and means. If they make it past John 6, there’s good chance they will embrace saving faith as a gift from their new, true God and Lord.
Then again, don’t be surprised if you friend quits before the end of John 6. The Lord doesn’t want anyone to perish, but sadly, not all come to repentance. They don’t trust what He says, doubt what He does, won’t embrace true spirituality, and soon walk away.
What about you?
Prayer: Steadfast Lord, You know how shakable, tentative, wavering, and wayward I can be. May the words of Jesus come alive to me, I pray.
