The True Meaning of the Word "Religion"

I'm seventy years old and all my life I was taught to despise the word "religion"
I recently decided to do a word study since it is used in Scripture.
In the Greek New Testament the word religion is "threskos"

James 1:26- Those who consider themselves "religious" and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless.
  1. fearing or worshipping God
  2. to tremble
The word "religion" in it's latin root "re-ligare" means
" to tie back" "to bind back"

To take man, who has fallen (Adam) from
God, and tie him back to God !

The archaic definition is "scrupulous conformity."

Seems to me those who say “It’s a relationship with Christ, not a religion” are on shaky ground. If religion "binds us back" and implores us to fear and worship" God, what do they want? Freedom from God? Freedom to be their own god and do their own thing? Idolatry of self has no part of true Christianity. Likewise, they use the word relationship but how many are pursuing a relationship with the world over devotion, love and relationship with Christ?

A video called “Why I Hate Religion, But Love Jesus” went viral on Facebook. The young man who made it said, in essence, Jesus came to abolish religion. Then the church came along and re-instituted it, telling people there was a particular way to live in order to be a Christian. Saying, now we need once more to be liberated from the "shackles of religion" in order to be able to freely worship Jesus.

What do some of you think of the word Religion?
