And he cried to the LORD, and the LORD showed him a log, and he threw it into the water, and the water became sweet. There the LORD made for them a statute and a rule, and there he tested them, Exodus 15:25 ESV
When there’s trouble to endure, why is complaining the go-to response? The Israelites were rescued from slavery. They saw the Red Sea divide as they walked on a dry seabed to escape Egyptian soldiers. They had heard about the Promised Land. Yet it was the quality of available drinking water that reduced their gratitude to grumbling.
If this was a test, then the people failed miserably. But God had an actual test, and the people continued to fail. Exodus 15:26 says, “If you will diligently listen to the voice of the Lord your God, and do that which is right in his eyes, and give ear to his commandments and keep all his statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you that I put on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, your healer.”
If this was a class, it was a nearly forty-year failure. The Israelites didn’t listen to God, do the right thing, or keep His statues.
There’s no use being judgmental. We all face the same struggle. God gives us the keys to a godly life, and we receive them as mere suggestions in the event our way fails. The people of Israel couldn’t follow God, and neither can any of us today—without His help.
Prayer: Father, I can always get through the worst experiences in the best possible way when You join me in the journey. When I fail Your tests, keep teaching me.
